Stupid LiL jars!

I hate doing 5 dozen jars, takes way too long, all night infact and you have the problem of contams. So i thought id try something new, Bulk! I bought 5 oven bags, (turkey bags) in each one I put 8 cups of vermiculite, 2 2/3 cup of Brown rice flower and 2 2/3 cup of water. the same formula as 12 1 pint jars. I boiled the oven bags for 60 minutes in a pot of water just like I would do jars. Then I took a 1 pint jar that was already 100% colonized, 100% contam free of coarse, and broke into tiny little pieces, almost to the size of small bird seeds. I waited till the oven bags had cooled down, about 6 hours later. Then I placed the small broken pieces of cake into the 5 oven bags, distributing them as evenly as possible. Put the bags in a dark place, 7 days later, Whalla! I now have 5 dozen 1 pint jars worth of substrate that is succesfully colonizing with 0 contams. And It all took me about an hour to fill 5 bags, then boiling time, and there was no inaculating to do, no syringe, no jars, this was way to easy!!! When I broke up the cake and put into the bags I used a glove that I made, I will post pictures of the entire proccess and the glove box. If you want to make your own glove box, heres how.... I bought a large sterilite tupperware, clear, i think it's 66 liter. Gloves for washing dishes. Hepa filter, small replacement one for other machines. welders glue, to hold the gloves in place. A PC cooling fan and an AC/DC adapter. First thing, I put the tupperware upside down, so I use the lid as the bottom. I took the tupperware and cut 2 holes about just larger than my fist, so I can get my hands thru them. Put the gloves in there and glued them with the welders glue. Then I cut a hole in the top to fit in the hepa filter, glued that in tight. cut a hole in the side for the fan, placing it backwards so it sucks the air thru the hepa filter and out of the box. then I splice the wire on the fan and the ac/dc adapter, out the wires together and plug it in, and your all done, you know have a 100% sterile environment. The Bag of substrate Boiling the bag for 60 minutes The smal pieces of colonized cake broken up, i was a little messy with it. A view into the homemade glovebox. My small hepa filter from target, $20.00 The pc cooling fan sucking bad contam air out of the box. Full view of my glovebox, thanks to target for all the supplies being under $50. And finally 5 days later you can see a good amount of growth. The only thing i wonder about oven bags, is air getting out? I can smell the honey and BRN mix thru the bag. I now placed all the bags into a large tuppwerware, just to make sure.

Dig it man. I been trying to get away from jars for various reasons, this tek sounds pretty easy. Plus I feel comfortable with the Pf substrate. Looking forward to your pics.

O and to seal the bags, all I did was twist it up and used a rubberband real tight. Worked just fine.

And if you decide to PC, nylon string wrapped and tied tightly is what you want to use. Rubberbands in the PC tend to stretch out with jars and I can see them becoming quite loose in a PC. Sometimes they'll even snap.

The turkey bags you use...are those the bags that are used to hold stuffing? Can you PC them?

You can buy PC-able bags in any grocery store. They're simply called 'oven bags'. I use Reynolds brand.

mycobags work very well too. They sell just the bag and you put in your favorite substrate. The bags are high quality and have a filter patch to allow for air exchange wile keeping contams out.

Yeah, I'd buy some filter bags from Mycosupply if I used them for substrate for sure. My last reply was a little deceptive. I actually use oven bags just for pasteurization of casing mix.

So i just thought of a new question.... Can i continue to grow shrooms with never needing another spore sprint? From what i gather, yes? Using the tek above? So really I can grow millions of shrooms from just one spore print??

No it will get more and more unsterile each time you G2G. By the 3-4 time your sure to have uncontrollable contams. Im suprised the bags dont pop with no air escape.
Just a note, you can always just birth a cake right into a bag and break it up after you seal the bag by squishing it. Also its good to have a nice big space of air and some sort of ventilation like a napkin ring stuffed with polyfiil fixed on the top.
Will you be birthing these chunks of myc or make casings?
