If there is mold on the top layer of dry vermiculite should you still use that cake?

the contamination forum would be better suited for this question, but ill take a shot. i would take the verm off and separate it from the other cakes and just see how it grows. if you notice any discoloration or weird smell then toss it.

Anything that's not myc is a big guess i'd say. My cat likes keeping them around anyway, it's happened more than once that she's had a nasty and the myc just plows right over it and fruits anyway. Just be careful.

Is it mold or is it mycelium? What color is it?

In general if you can see the mold then it has allready sporulated. Isolate and destroy it. Wash any glassware very well before your reuse it.
