the new green day album (american idiot)
    #3238129 - 10/10/04 01:18 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

it is fucking genius. it is the wall of this generation. it is the best thing to be released in years. it blows your psychedelic garbage off the map. it should be heard by all who like rock music, at loud volume, and seen that this is pure emotion...not some drug influenced non-sense thrown together to sell a record.

it is genius! did i already say that?

I like rock music, and although I have not listened to the album in its entirety, the single they put out is a disgrace to the band and their genre.

I was just saying that compared to Green Days older stuff, I think this new single is rather disappointing.
...and I dont like hoobastank. Thats not rock, its pop.
As for "real" punk, I dont claim to be the authority on it, Im just going by my own taste in music, which includes a wide variety of rock as well as the "drug induced" music you look so unfavorably upon.

Everyone in this thread needs the first BAD BRAINS lp. then we can talk punk.

I lived it in the 80s folks.

I am punk. And have the street tattoos to prove it.

It's a pretty good album...for Green Day. One listen was enough.

If radio and MTV is your only exposure to music, I suppose I could see how you would think it was really great.

There is no 'real' punk. Labels mean nothing.

Quite true.

I like the new Green Day CD too though. Yes Dookie was the greatest and probably always will be, but I think this CD is very well done. I like it.

The most common response to a new album by a band with some history is "its ok, but not like their old stuff" Fuck it, how do you top dookie? ITs a masterpiece. Doesn't mean American Idiot isn't great too. If you can get past the whats punk hangups, stop thinking about music socio/politically, just listen to the sounds, its a great album. Try to turn off your critic brain when listening, otherwise it'll just run you in circles.

PS, this isn't directed at anybody, just general bitching about people who bitch too much.

in the words of 98 mute:

98 Mute Wrong lyrics

So you say you hate that band 'cause they sold out.
And you sold back all your records is that what it's all about.
Now listen up you fuckin' punk the songs are still the same.
'Cause others learn to like them doesn't make them fuckin' lame.
You're wrong. You're so wrong. You're fuckin wrong...
Now run the fuck along.
Shame on all those bands,
yeah the ones who play for cash.
The ones that count their money as they sit back and they laugh.
Now don't you get too angry with all those KROQ fans.
With no time they'll bore and be searching for new bands.
You sold out.. They sold out.
We'd sell out, there's no fuckin' doubt.
So you got it figured out and you know it all.
Some of those bands were punk back when you were still hanging at the mall.
It's called respect and you don't have it and probably never will.
I know 'cause I was once like you just fighting against my will.

and now for some 98 Degrees lyrics as well..

"Dreaming"

Dreaming of you
Every single day and
every single night of my life
But someone else is holding you tight
So I'll see you in my dreams girl

Have you ever wanted someone so bad
That you really didn't care if they had
Any idea how you feel
(cause your dreams are so real)

Please help me
(to understand this feeling)
I'm dreaming (your body so appealing)
You're committed to someone else
But here in my mind, I have you all to myself

I know how your lips tase and feel though
I've never kissed them for real
so I find myself drifting away
(to my secret place)

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the lord, you're in my dreams
But you're committed to someone else
But here in my mind,
I have you all to myself

There are real ROOTs to the music and history.

Greenday dun fucked up after Dookie, but I wont sell out on a band I listened to since they was playing in Garage's because they we're on MTV

DK _was_ awesome, "... it's a holiday in cambodia...."
there stuff sounds great.  Jello Biafra on the other hand went TOTAL LOON.  I go to the Anarchist Bookfair each year in SF and he has spoken the last 3 times.

BadReligion  just slowed down, they did a tripple tour about two years ago, no new albums, I belive the 'Grey Race' was their last one.  ".... the grey race shivers, trapped inside, the world we create is black and white..."

People love making fun of my music collection, they go down and like... hrmm... OpIvy, CRASS, Fifteen, Siren, UK Subs, then they get to GReenday and like WTF - I kindly tell them I will listen to green day til I die

Which Generation? Seems we have three main gens in USA atm.

Babyboomers, (they own everything, and largest gen) dunno many baby boomers that are Greenday fans personaly, I guess they are rare.

Gen X (peeps born 1969/68-1981) I could see, but a lot of Gen X'ers decided to go agaisn't green day when everyone else did. Though GreenDays sound only slightly changed during the 'Insomniac" Album. But went right back to their roots on 'Nimrod' album.

Gen Y (yes Gen Y, ((the millenium generation))everyone born after 1981) peeps usally follow what their older brothers/sisters/friends (usally gen X'ers) listen to. Gen Y still young, and most gen Y greenday fans have never listened to 1029 smoothed out slappy hours or kerplunk.
