Wild Cubensis Pics(lots) from an LK and Gumby hunt
    #3238190 - 10/10/04 03:44 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

LK and I decided to hit up the same patch that we went to a few months ago despite the lack of rain in our area. We went via the usual method: canoe down a river to the field and pick everything worth keeping.

Because of the lack of rain and perhaps lower temps, the cubes were small, but were still out. Not nearly as much as earlier this year. The largest cap we found was probably 2.5" wide and smallest I found was .5"... smallest cube I've ever seen in my life. I'm not complaining though, LK is a very generous soul and let me keep the entire harvest! Thanks again, LK!

No clue on final wet weight, guessing around 75-100 grams. I'll post dry weight once it's known.

Anyways, I had a brilliant idea of how to get my $800 camera down the river without it being destroyed if the boat flipped: a styrofoam cooler and duct tape. So needless to say, I took a good amount of pics. Most of the cubes were bleached out from the sun, so the white balance is kinda fuckity on my cam, but you'll still enjoy the pics(I hope).

Sorry if I'm rambling, I've been drinking a bit of the absinthe... I'll shut up. Here's the pics(LK should post his when his near a computer, he took his cam too):

As always, we also found quite a bit of these Panaeolus antillarum(inactive).

I took my snake hook along incase we encountered any snakes in the field(we did last time) but all I found was this Slimey salamander:

Didn't touch the thing becuase they make your hands ungodly sticky. Anything you touch after handling the salamander is gluded to your hands for about a day. I played with enough of these things in my middle school days to learn my lesson.

Well, thats it. Hope you enjoyed it.

That's a good idea, I have been wrapping my cam up in a zip-lock bag (to keep out moisture) and putting it into a box with some tissue paper for padding. I get real paranoid about taking cams out with me.

You have a nice cam there and it takes some great pics, I always enjoy new photos. That salamander there is interesting.. Looks almost purple to me(?) That makes me want to go look for my field guide to "reptiles and amphibians of north america".

Nah, Slimey Salamanders are jet black with white spots. I think the flash is what gave him that purple hue.

Oh, yea.. My damn monitor settings are off or something. Looks a little dark. Luckily I have 2 computers/monitors and the other one seems to be more correct.

I think you need to check the spore prints on that because it looks more like a... a... a... oh, fuck it. It's a cube!
