Dunking colonized popcorn?
    #3237459 - 10/09/04 10:10 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've got a lot of 100% colonized popcorn that finished colonizing about 1-2 weeks ago. I'm going to case now, but I'm worried that the substrate might be a bit dry. Would anybody recommend dunking before casing?

Also, I was thinking of casing with only vermiculite.. anybody got any experience with that?

you could try dunking it before casing, i wouldnt do it IMO, straight verm is fine, just wet it slightly so it's not dripping

There's no need to dunk, you can add moisture through the casing layer. A friend of mine has had pretty good luck with casing popcorn with straight verm. Add a little extra moisture to your casing, or give it an especially heavy misting right after casing. As long as you have holes in your casing pan for runoff and/or a bottom casing layer, you should be fine.
