Ordering cactus in winter
    #3237291 - 10/09/04 09:01 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I will be ordering cactuses from plant-planet.com and from ebay. Now, some of the plants will be rooted and some of them will be cuttings. Since I'm going to be ordering these not now, more like mid-November and so it will be cold and they won't be getting very much sunlight (since I can't put them outside cause of the temperature but in my one room I have pretty big widows so a good amount of light should come through, but it's still the winter), do I have to do anything extra for the cactus to make sure it'll make it through the move? Also, since winter is the dormant period for a cactus, will they not adapt to the new environment very well, or have trouble?

The rooted cactuses probably won't be too much trouble, since they already have roots - the cuttings will most likely be the ones to give me a problem. So anything I have to do extra for the rooted cactus and cuttings since it will be in winter?

I've never owned a cactii. I've never helped one through a move. I dont know the answers to any of your questions, but I feel your lonely pain.

We're here for you, buddy.

Cacti can take a beeting, as long as they dont freeze. They could probably stand temps around 25-30F for a day or two while in transit. Throw the rooted ones near some sunlight or in a closet with floros or a MH. Root the other cuttings in a shady spot and dont water for for 4-5 weeks.

Don't worry
The cuttings will root fine at room temp. No need to do anything extra.

If you want to get a headstart with the growing and have the resources, follow Gr0wer's advice..

You can also not water after the cuttings root and let them be dormant till spring.

Either way, when the days are sunny and nice bring them outside and start watering, liming and fertilizing like a madman. The lifeforms will thank ya!

You can still feed them once there well rooted indoors but water acording to the amount of light your giving them. Run em dryer if its a bad spot but if its getting a good 5-7 hours of light you can water/fert every day as you would outside or under lights. Buy a good cactus fert, low N.
