For those having problem with Perlite PMP
    #3235976 - 10/09/04 09:19 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Okay... I wasn't using perlite before, but after hearing so many people requesting help with perlite PMP humidity, I went out and made myself one.(I was in need of a second terrarium, anyways)

It worked right off the bat with 2" perlite and 1" of water. I added some more water and the RH went down to aroun 85% at 1.5" and 80% at nearly flood. I guess finding problem was the easy part.

When I lowered the water level, nothing... 80% solid. I poured a bit of warm water to raise the temp after removing a bit more water raised to 88%, then back down to 80% as the temp dropped.

I remember a case where one person said that he solved it by drying the perlite by nuking in microwave. So, I tried that. Talk about a mess, though. But it worked.

So... I recreated the problem by wetting the entire perlite by swatting water around. Then I came up with a better solution.

1. Remove water water soaking a dry clean towel in the corner and tilt the terrarium, or use a strainer if you got one.

2. Put and even out the perlite in the terrarium.

3. Use hot water the faucet(I had mine at 140F) fill the terrarium 1" below the top of the perlite.

4. Close the lid and let cool.

The heat from the vapors actually help dry out the top layer.
Oviously, you can't do this if you have your cakes in there, in which case, best bet is to replace top layer of your perlite all together. Anyways, hope that solves that problem for everyone.

This is without an aquarium bubbler, right?

I really think a bubbler is the key for high humidity in a PMP.

yeah. PMP using dual wands and perlite has some issues when they get wet.

What sorts of issues are there with foam wand bubblers and perlite?

Humidity. It appears if the all of the perlite were wet, even if it was becaue you moving around the perlite too much, the humidity falls. There's been more than few threads on people asking for help with perlited PMP. I just had to figure it out, so I went out and bought some perlite to experiment with. If your stuff works, just great. If not, try this and if this doesn't agree with you, post a message with your setup and I'll see if I can duplicate the problem. If I can make the problem, I'm pretty sure I can come up with a solution.

Sam

PS I was going to use the perlited PMP for some cakes, but I'll keep it out as an experimental pod. GL

So it would be best to just put an airstone (bubbler) in a glass bottle then, in addition to the perlite? That would cut it?

Well, Santos is going to set a bubbler in a jar and then line the bottom of the tank with vermiculite. Santos doesn't want to have to be spraying all the time.

Layering with vermiculite isn't a very good idea, I don't think. The whole point of using perlite is because of its massive surface area. That surface area is what increases the humidity(over what just an inch of water would generate). Vermiculite absorbs water, and becomes compacted. You'll end up with a stinky wet cake of vermiculite.... heh

Perlite needs a place to soak the water from. So a bottle with air stone in it will not be enough. Perlite in that case would be just whole bunch of rocks on the bottom. You need some perlite in the water and about 1"-1.5" above that's not wet.

The air bubble wands to the bottom is an effective way of providing fresh air so you don't have to fan the CO2 out. If you put the air wands on the top of perlite, you'll see a big drop on RH. I tried 1 on top and 1 on bottom and was stable at 89-92% depending on location in the pod.

This thread was for people still having problems with perlited PMP. If you don't have any problems, I don't see any reason you need to mess with your rig. Just trying to give back, you know...

Anyways, happy growin'

Ok. Well S. didn't want to wait to have a problem to ask these sorts of questions.

Perhaps S. was unclear. There will be about a 2" layer of perlite spread out on the bottom, with a 1/2 inch layer of water maintained in it. (Standard perlite humification - Step 1)
In addition, a bottle w/water in it will be placed on top of the perlite, and an airstone will be submerged in it - thereby increasing the humidity and helping to circulate the air. (Step 2)

The reason for the airstone instead of the submerged wand bubbler method is for concern that the wand(s) will spritz up a bit of water onto the perlite, dampening it and thereby decreasing its' efficacy in humidifying the chamber. The wands are still in their boxes and returnable.

Comments? Thanks

I've doubled the air flow to 1 wand to see how much water "spritz up" and messes with the humidity. I'm using 120L per hour pumps, so.... about 240L per hour or about 61 gal per hour.

I'll update this post in about an hour. I really really want to spend next hour birthing my jars.

Okay, update. Land_Crab, the perlite was not affect by wand pushing a lot(I mean a lot) of air. But I did notice that perlite was lifted up a whole bunch, so I put some bags of corals to keep it down. I'll update you again in about 20 minutes as to how it actually affect the perlite with some weight holding it down.

Okay, update. I can hear the bubbles, but I don't see it. it's slightly damp around where the wand lies, but the humidity is holding at 99%. I have 2" perlite and about an inch of water.

Looks good under. Just on a personal note, i think it'd be okay to have a separate bottle(I'll try this before I go to sleep... I have to go buy a bubble stone), but I think the space you gain is invaluable. I just birthed 10 jars and boy! Real Estate is real commodity in my pod.

I'll post about the separate bottle thing tomorrow.

i dont get it. the standard PF tek states, CLEARLY, that you need to soak the perlite and remove the water, there should be no standing water.....standing water lowers the RH by reducing surface area for water to evaporate from...its so easy to just use perlite and fan a few times a week, by making more and more shortcuts you will be shooting yourself in the foot.

just my 2 cents.
