Mushrooms found in garden (cyans?), need ID please
    #3235798 - 10/09/04 05:08 AM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I found these in the garden after cutting the grass (luckily at the highest setting). After looking at some books I think they might be Psilocybe Cyanescens, but would appreciate confirmation. I don't think there are any mature ones as something seems to be nibbling them as they get larger (rabbits?).

a. Habitat:

Location: New Forest, Hampshire, UK (south coast).
Weather: Storm a few days ago, intermittent rain since then.
Habitat: On lawn underneath (and in shade of) Magnolia tree. Amongst leaf litter (until I mowed the lawn).

b. Characteristics of the gills:

Gills only just attached to stem, they have a convex shape sweeping up to the top of the stem. Colour is orangey-tan when fresh, going dark brown with blue/ turquiose tint once picked.

c. Measurements of cap and stem:

(Stems cut near base).

Stem: 3-6 cm.
Cap: 2-3 cm

d. Characteristics of the stem:

Whitish, quite stiff, thinish. Largest ones have thin hole up the centre.

e. Characteristics of the cap:

Very young ones are dome shaped, larger ones are flat with slight bump in centre, edges point upwards and slightly wavy. Colour is rich (but not too dark) brown.

f. Spore print color:

Dark brown/ slightly purplish.

g. Color that the mushroom bruises:

Bruise vivid blue/ turquiose, stem I pulled off of sporeprint one became completely stained, ended up shrivelling up & looking a bit like a piece of grass.

h. Scent of mushroom

They smell very like shop bought field mushrooms. Nothing distinctive.

For the hell of it, a panorama taken in spring:

The photos and the description fits Psilocybe cyanescens.

Thanks, that's good news Anno.

Something I forgot to ask in the first post, should I harvest them before the nibbler finishes them off, or should I risk it & let them spread their spores?

Also, is there anything I could spread to make them more comfortable, wood chips, compost etc?

Cheers

Nick

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Just harvested 5 (with a pair of scissors), chopped them up and mixed them with some absinthe and water (best thing I know for nullifying tastebuds!).

Just off for a bit

Edit: 3 hours later, and what a lovely time I've had! Watched Bjork's Royal Opera house gig DVD (Matmos doing rhythm) in surround sound, 'all is full of love' indeed. Then a bit of Manu Chao at Glastonbury. If it wasn't for my cold nose and very long arms, everything would be perfect  Might even open the windows and let the world know I'm in soon!
