hypothetical bulk setup
    #3233865 - 10/08/04 04:22 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

1. will one cubic foot of steer manure(mixed with straw and spawn) create enough substrate for a bulk grow in an 18 gallon (68.1 Liter) rubbermaid tub? will this make enough substrate for a second run after the first bulk is spent?

2. where does a city dweller find straw? (specific vendors please)
4. is a 6 inch substrate depth in one of these containers a good start? or should it be deeper to produce large fruits?

5. why should a meat thermometer be used if the oven is turned on to 180f (correct temp?) and left there? how could it possibly get hotter inside an oven than what the dial says?

6. is steer manure from the bag you can buy at garden stores in need of sun drying or leeching? its dry, but not crumbly brittle dry, but not moist or damp dry. i read that it doesn't need to be leached, just mixed with straw and pasteurized from there.

7. does a poo/straw mixed substrate get treated like a regular straw substrate when it comes to colonization? ie...put it right in the tub you are going to use for fruiting and cover it with plastic.??

8. as far as air exchange goes, can tyvek rectangle patches be glued over a rectangular slice out of the fruiting chamber at substrate level on both sides of the chamber to provide proper air exchange (not having to fan at all)?

i'll ask some more annoying questions when they come to mind, i'm just trying to get a feel for what i can't grasp from the bulk teks. thanks

1. 1cu/ft= 7.5 gal so your bin will fill 42% of the bin. You should get a few flushed off that.

2. Go to a nursery, you might have to go a bit out of the city, its in stock now that its fall.

3. Anywhere from 10-30% manure. Anwyhere from 1:5-1:10

4.6" is as thick as you should go.

5. To read the core temp. Also most ovens arent perfectly calibrated.

6. You can leach if you want.

Tyvek is used for gas exchange, not air exchange. What sort of chamber is it? If its just a rubbermaid make some holes and stuff polyfil in there. You'll need more then just holes for air exchange though, either a pump or cool mist pumping in air or you'll need to fan.

Tyvek is great but I don't know about never fanning.

damn, i guess i'm lazy, fanning sucks. it's good to get rid of the c02 so i'd throw polyfill through some holes. how many holes should be drilled in an 18 gallon rubbermaid?

Well if you want to think of a way that says you don't need no fanning (I'm a believer in fresh air but can't argue with results):
