Upside down, or right side up?
    #3233707 - 10/08/04 05:42 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

Yet another question from the Noobgobbler.  Does it make a difference if the cakes are situated upside down (narrow end on bottom, wide end w/residual vermiculite on top) or right side up, when fruiting?  Does the residual vermiculite affect the growth of the fruit?  Maybe this is a ridiculous question, but that's why I'm here!

Thanks
- J.

When fruiting you need to have the vermiculite down, and have as much mycellium exposed to light as possible.

It doesnt matter. People often use a tek called double end casing, which is when you put verm under and ontop of the cake(Wet verm). This helps hold in moisture and give bigger flushs. Also rolling the cake in verm and misting it down will help. Dunking in the fridge over night will increase yields beyond belief.

People also roll in verm and cover the whole thing so NO myc is showing. It will colonize the thin verm layer and show itself. This will increase yeilds as well. It doesnt matter which end you put up but I would put them right side up just because thats how it was when it colonized.

It's all matter of a preference. Mycelium have an up or down. Just point the light from 1 direction and the mushrooms will follow like foliage.

Do whatever you are comfortable with. You can just birth some cakes that colonized early without double end or roll, and next set with double end and so on and so forth... It's really all upto you. I'm planning on keep 2 cakes without dunk/roll just because i would like to make sure I get a good print from at least one of them to keep me going.

Good luck.

Dunk and roll the cakes and get bigger shrooms for better prints!

No contam problem from dunking and rolling..it can only help. IMO, the only reason not to do it is because your lazy or out of verm

And make some liquid cultures to keep you going forever. Nice and easy and recommended to anyone who is going to do multiple grows.

The fridge? That makes me nervous. Isn't that too cold? What is the lowest temperature you can subject the mycelium to and not damage it?

just don't freeze it. It'll be fine.

And don't keep it under water too long. 12-24 hours is good. Too long and it will start to drown.

Landcrab, Putting it in the fridge is called cold shocking and it helps enduce fruiting.

I would have to agree.

I have done them both ways.

I have gotten better overall flushes by putting the verm side down. The cakes pinned all over.

With the verm side up the fruits just grew from the top of the cake.

Could anyone post a link to a "dunk and roll" tech ... or is it just simply rolling the cake in verm after pulling it out of the water?

Thanks

I did it for a week.

To long? I'd say around 6 months..maybe sooner though like 1-3 months.

Yes I've left them in for a week so far is the longest. Someone asked the longest you could keep them dunked, I gave my opinion but also that the opinion is a guess. Two cakes had no problem after a week so theres no doubt that a week isn't to long.

Overnight dunk is more then enough, I was just away on vacation

Sorry, another quick question about the "dunk and roll"  I just want to make sure I have this right ... (sorry, this is the first time I have heard of rolling a dunked cake in verm) I dunk/cold shock for about 12 hours, take the cake out of the water bath and roll all sides (so it is completely covered) in verm, then take the cake and put it into my grow chamber?  Does the verm have to be wet like someone had mentioned above, or just make sure you can't see any myc through a dry layer of verm?  Also, is there any reason I wouldn't want to do this before the first flush?

Thanks, and sorry for kinda changing the topic of the thread a couple times LoL
