honey (or other nutritious subatance) with dunk?
    #3233438 - 10/08/04 04:36 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

A buddy of mine just got done with his second flush on 2 casings and is considering a dunk.

He is wondering if anyone dunks using anything nutritious to put some of the bang back into the casing.

Also, is there any kind of recipe for some liquid shroom food you could add to a mister to help offset the myc using up the nutes in the substrate?

generally, this idea is dismissed as it could invite contamination.

the only thing i have considered is injecting a cake/casing with nute water with a sterile needle in a few places in small amounts, though it it mot worth the risk IMO.

NEVER add anything nutritious to your casing. One of the primary functions of a casing is to provide an environment that is simultaneously hospitable to mycelium and inhospitable to bacteria and competing fungi.

By the time mycelium is cased, it's pretty much had its fill of food and won't make much use of any more; that's why it's perfectly happy colonizing through the non-nutritious casing while bacteria and other contamination vectors don't care for it much.

If you add any kind of nutrients to the casing, it will suddenly become a buffet for bacteria and other critters you don't want.

Make sense?  :mushroom2:

Makes sense, perfect sense. i was thinking about why casings stop flushing if you continued adding water. I figured it was due to them running out of nutrients so i guess a better question would be - how can you keep your casings flushing and not running out of shrooms?

Thank

You cant.

Use poo and get big flushes. I usually dont like to get more then 3 personally before a new one takes its place.

I would think it would be fine as long as you wash the cakes off after the nutrient dunk.

The mister wouldn't work because it would leave sugar all over the outside of the cake.

Totally agree Sounds like a recipe for contams without a doubt in this mind! I don't recommend it.

Everything dies off at one point. Sure you could keep it going. But also note that the longer you keep casings/cakes/whatever you are growing, they not only start to produce smaller and smaller flushes. They are also less contam resistant.

I have seen people pull 8+ flushes, but those flushes are very very weak. Not even worth it.

It is much easier to just start some more jars and get going again.

I would suggest doing 6-12 jars at a time. Once you put those casings into fruiting, start another 6-12 jars. That way you constantly have something fruiting. Once the next set of jars are colonized, and the casings made and ready for fruiting, toss the casings that are currently flushing.

Yeah I have some casings that just did their 8th flush. There only being kept cause my room mate still has room in his closet untill all this damn straw finishes colonizing. They only gave out an 1/8th last flush for a quart of rye. Other flushes were good but after 3 its just down hill.

I forgot though and no one mentioned..if your not like me and don't live in an apartment with no grassy area you could bury the spent casings outdoors. They can still produce more outside, just start outdoor patches all up in the woods or something once your jars get to the 3rd flush. Takes me around 5-6 weeks once the leave the incubator until they're ready to leave my closet (if I have a new one read to take its place, if not it stays for another flush) and jars to colonize even from spores only take 2 weeks then another few days as a casing in the incubator. That makes it very easy to make whatever you need to replace casings as they get old and not waste your time having casings after 3 flushes getting lame yeilds.

Hmm, buying is what i intend to do with mine but its really starting to get pretty cold over here (England) And i'm not expecting any results from doing so.

If its so necersary to grow around 24-26 degrees C indoors i can't imagine much happening in these temperatures.

Mycelium will often survive the winter and just not fruit then come season again, will start fruiting. This is what I've heard though and like I said, apartment and no where for outdoor patches so this is only what I've heard. I also remember hearing something about needing to be in the ground before getting to cold though to let it establish itself in the cold to make sure it survives the winter though. Mycelium is pretty tough though and if you throw it in the ground I'd imagine theres a chance it will come up later when the season rolls around again.

Yeah, well its worth a try anyhoo, I'd rather bury and chance occasional mushrooms in the future than just throw it away and see the last of it then and there!!

Everythings worth a try
And fingers crossed there will be some reward
