Maitake trying to fruit...
    #3183146 - 09/26/04 04:10 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I did a little bag of maitake waaaay back and pretty much forgot about it.  a week or so ago I noticed a little grey/brown ball of growth popping out of it, but when I tried to take the block out of the bag to check it out I broke it off :frown:.  so I set it back in the bag and left it, now it has a couple more of these things on it, they're just starting to get lobes/leaflets

I'm not expecting them to get very large, there's barely any substrate, but I'll keep it updated as they develop. I'll let them get some air in the next few days and see how it goes.  too bad I didn't use more woodchips, I didn't think I would get anything though.  just thought I'd post it .

That's interesting.
Basidiocarp also tried to grow them, but had problem fruiting them indoors.
(see: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...o=&fpart=1)

Could you tell us a little bit more about the substrate, temperature, humidity ?
Would also be interesting to know where you got the strain from and how long it took till the first pins appeared ...

the substrate is colonized birdseed spawned at a high rate to alder woodchips.  temps the past couple weeks have varied from highs in the mid 60s to low 70s and lows in the 50s-low 60s (fahrenheit, of course  ).  it's been pretty humid, but the block hasn't been out of the bag I have it in so it hasn't been exposed to the humidity outside.  I keep the bag outside, out of direct light.

the strain came from someone on here, shroomophile I believe, he also had some try to fruit in jars if I remember correctly.  I added the spawn to woodchips way back on 5-28(!), though I think it just didn't fruit over the summer because it was too warm.

Have you had some bigger fluctuation in temperature when they started to fruit ?
I have realized that a lot of mushrooms start pinning when the temperatures differences between night and day are getting bigger in autumn.
Btw.: How does maitake taste ?

yeah, we had it go from highs of 80+ to highs in the 60s-70s pretty quickly not long ago.

I tried a small bite of the little piece I accidentally broke off the block a while back and it had a very unique (in a good way) taste to it, I would definitely like to try more .

I just had my first taste of it today and damn.

Damn it's good. At 20 bucks a pound I couldn't afford to eat very much though. I get to try lobster and pigs ear tomorrow  :shroomer:
