New syringe ?uestion
    #3230901 - 10/07/04 09:57 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

HI, Well Tonight I just got done pressure cooking 3 batches of 3 pint WBS jars in the new 4.2q $17 dollar cooker. Right now they are cooling in the oven, and tommorow I plan on Innoculating them. My question comes in making a syringe. I purchased 2, 22guage sterile packaged syringes. Do I still need to boil water in a suace pan and use it to sterilize the syringe, or is this for sterilization of the water? Also is it necessary to let the syringe sit for the period after boiling the water before I can proceed to scraping the spore print into a shot glass and then sucking it up? How long should I let the new spore syringe sit before I inoculate? I would like to inoculate the jars within 12 hours. However I do want to do it right. So any advice or imput would be greatly appriciated.
Thank you,
Eazy Growin

Yeah, boiling your water would be for the water...the syringe will be sterile.  Just let it sit long enough to cool down.

You dont have to wait for the spores to hydrate just shake the shit out of the syringe before innoculating

I just went through this. I had sterile water and containers, though, so a bit differnt. You'll need a source of sterile water. It's prudent to follow the whole procedure unless you have them because you'll need to suck in and out on water few times to break up the spores chunks. Contamination at this stage will ruine all your crops. So, it's better, IMHO, to be prudent.

I got response from 12 hours to 2 days for rehydrating spores in the syrange. I had mine in the water for 20 hours and it worked out great. After you make the syringes, put them in a zip lock bag(keep it as sterile as possible) without the needles at room temperature. I've read that you can inoculate it immediately but it'll slow down the colonization dramatically.

I hope that helps.

Waiting for spores to hydrate doesnt slow them down that much....
Shurely doesnt slow anything down dramatically

Actually, PF Tek here says it's very important you let them rehydrate completely before inoculation. But some of the other derivatives says to go ahead and inoculate if you are in a hurry.
