This is terrible.
    #3230100 - 10/07/04 10:20 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

After all the damn work i've put into this. I inoculated today and put the jars in the incubator and went to the gym. when i came home and checked the temp it read 106 fucking degrees. Apparently the switch got bumped or something and cranked my heater way up. Should i even bother to wait and see if any spores survived or just start all over. I find it particularly ironic that 106 degrees is exactly what is listed as the thermal death rate of mycelium. Perhaps God doesnt want me growing shrooms.

Thermal death of mycelium would've happened. But the spores are supposed to be a bit more stable. I'd wait few days and see.

I cooked a casing once. Accidentally had the pad on medium instead of low. I was worried but I let it cool after being very hot for about 2 hours and it fruited fine. Give it some time. Also yeah, spores are more likely to have survived.

Hell no, your spores are probably fine. Hopefully you weren't out that long and the inside didn't get too hot.

Some must have survived.

If you just innocculated it, I don't thing 106 degrees would kill spores. The spores take time to turn to mycelium, some longer than others. I say you just be more careful and learn from your mistake.

I don't think you hurt anything.

Just because your thermometer got that hot doesnt mean your myc did. In fact I bet it didnt and its fine. Not to mention if still spores they'd survive. Keep them and see what happens.

What? Ive had a casing at my idiot friends house hover around 110-115F for about a week and it still fruited once put into cooler temps. Dont throw em out yet, they may take time to recover but there not dead.

Thats encouraging but i'd say they were at that temp around an hour being pessimistic less maybe. i'm gonna wait a while and see but even if they didnt get killed i'll bet all my H2o evaportated out. i'm not messing with heating anymore. It stays around 70 with no help. i know thats not optimal but this has scared me out of using heaters.

What you have to do is get a heater that works with a seperate sensor. They're like 30 bucks on ebay and you put the sensor in the tub with the jars and set it to 83 and it keeps it there. If you set it to 83 otherwise it heats the water to 83 and that could be MUCH hotter then 83 because they are meant to be used in certain amounts of water and we are also trapping the heat using the second tub. Experimenting has to be done setting the temps and leaving it there for a while and seeing what the fluctuations are but you can do this with no jars in it. 70 degrees could double or triple your time as opposed to 83 and make it a little more difficult to fruit without a cold shock.

Either way good luck!

not all newbies. If you are going to invest in another incubator, I suggest you go the way of Tub in Tub(TnT) It'll really make them happy. mine are little less than 8 days old and couple of jars were done last time I checked. So, go in style.
