MY POOR POOR PEDRO - It's being erased
    #3229355 - 10/07/04 07:37 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

In my latest installment of the cosmic joke God has inflicted upon me, my cactus is being consumed with black spots.

I just moved into my house, and recently potted some cuttings that had fallen off my cactus before the move. There finally in a spot where they are gettting ample light, and it shows, the pups which are only 8 weeks old are fat, bright green and about 4 inches tall. It had some black spots already, but they just started consuming the thing. Some of them have gotten larger than a quarter.

I also started noticing these little white bugs that seemed to have silk coming out their arse attaching themselves to my plant at night and congregating in one spot. There were several places you could tell they had just sat there and baked in the sun and caused a callus.

I sprayed it with some tobbaco water (1/3 a bag of chewing tobbaco seeped in enough water to fill a large mister bottle) to no avail. I even cut out a few spots that were particularly bad and old and now it's been raining for several days and caused these to turn even more black.

Help me help him. Help me, help HIM!

I've never had experience in dealing with pests yet, it'll be my turn soon i'm sure of it :/

They sound like mealy bugs, I'd lift up the cactus and flood it with water, get rid of the buggers in the soil and on the cactus. Then wait for someone to recomend a good deterrent because I cannot unfortunatly.

They don't look like that. I'm not sure what they are.

I'll try and take some pics of the various ailments when it stops raining.

If God has his way, it won't be soon.

Ok, well webbing is a characteristic of mites, but you say they are quite large? Possibly Spider mites, do a bit of research on google or something about mites and look at some pictures.

hi HC, it's a pity to hear about your cactus being plagued!
i looked for a good recipe i used to use but i couldn't manage to find so here it comes from memory.
it should put an easy end on those bastards, they even seem to enjoy the nicotine.

for each litre bottle add:
- 5ml dishsoap;
- 5ml ~50% malathion;
***edit >>> - 20ml alcohol (90% or so) or methylated spirits; (i was thinking on 2liter pet bottles...)
- fill the rest of the liter with water;

there you go, spray this mix on your plants (its a bit stinky) and see the white fuzzes bleed red a couple hours after...
no need to panic, good luck HC.

:laugh:

It's been a while!  I figured you'd know the answer.

Thanks and I'll give it a shot.  Will this even help with the black spot/rot ??

Much appreciation felixhigh.

i'm not sure about the black spot, does it seems to be under the cactus skin?
did you try to chop off the infected areas? did it show any different coloration in the supposedly contaminated flesh?
i'm seing some blackening under the skin of a t. spachianus i have... i thought it was some kind of scale and didn't really bother so far...
