Mushrooms too big.
    #3229351 - 10/07/04 07:37 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

MY mushrooms are getting a lot larger than I thought they would, and are now touching the top of the terrarium. Can I leave them like this? Will they just get fatter or grow in a wierd direction, or should I try and put it somewhere where they can grow to full height?

you could leave it on i think they will bend you can even turn a cake upside down and it will turn around you can do it every other day and make them wavy if the caps still round. its fun to do. they grow cramped in jars and make funny shapes too. where theres space they will use it

move the light. mush will follow. it'll probably end up looking retarded, though, because mushroom will think it's up whereever the light is.

Ok I'm just going to let them deal with the lid by themselves. Looking forward to some funny looking mushrooms :mushroom2:.

mine hit the ceiling on my grow wasn't too much of a problem because there was around 10" of headroom, and a lot of em used it all! If your lid is really low and you are using a decent substrate layer in casings (2" or so) or cakes) you could get a bunch that hit and then they should get a bit fatter or just keep going up and get bent for a bit more.

If you can I would extend it though or switch tubs or aquariums or whataver you are growing in.

I already did switch the tubs , and then they got to the roof of the larger tub. Anyways, they sort of grew around in circles kind of like curly fries. Now they seem to have stopped growing completely, and the caps havent opened yet . They haven't really changed at all in a few days. I' wondering if I should just harvest them now, not get any prints :print:, and hope for better luck on the next flush?

You can harvest them before the veil breaks, a lot of people claim a higher potency this way.  Though I have no factual information to back up the potency thing.

Anyone have a reference?

It won't hurt them... I've grown some pretty big B+ ers on little pf cakes that hit the lid and just keep growing or the stem bends, they'll be fine or you can move the light, that can help.

Do mushrooms ever just stop growing before the veil breaks? I still would like some prints, but if they arent going to grow any more I think I'm better off just to pick them and start drying them.

the only reason a fruitbody would stop growing before the veil breaks is if it was damaged and abhorted. in that case the mushroom would slowly blue and eventually turn black before the veil cracks.

What would cause a fruitbody to abort before reching maturity? Would the caps turn dark like other aborts? The mushrooms still look reasonably healthy, and are a nice white colour with light brown caps. I'm going to give them a couple more days, and if they haven't grown I guess I will assume they are aborted and harvest.

Contams could or a change for the worse in their conditions (you stopped misting them, misted them to much, misted with to much h202, dropped the humidity, dropped fresh air exchange ect).

you could also damage them physically, sometimes their own weight breaks the mycellium at the bottom, or sometimes you may knock it. this is just one possibility though.

I dont think I saw this valuable choice ....."pick it"  no print though
Next time around set up a larger chamber . For now get creative !
Good Luck

PS You could clone it , if you must pick it , and IF you work with agar , just an option .
