Lawn Panaeolus in Florida
    #3229154 - 10/07/04 06:52 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Was walking today at the dry spots of the university and girlfriend found a single pretty dried up Panaeolus species in the lawn. Without having to be too Specific I think some of the floridian's might know this one... it isn't the unknown panaeolus and I'm very certain it's not psychoactive although maybe slightly. It has a red stipe. Black spore print (o f course)....

Thanks.

this is important, thanks again.

Sounds like a run of the mill Panaeolus sphinctrinus, I find them growing on my campus grass in the spring time.

Panaeolus papilionaceus, campanulatus, and sphrinctrinus belong to a species complex that all look a like. The complex needs revision or they just need to classify it as one species.

There's probably a wide variation from area to area as to how the appearance of these panaeolus are. My g/friend says she can't see it being the same fungus (as from the pics and the one we found) but with my experience (only a bit) I can see it as that same one---- the stem, the gills, the cap--- and having knowledge of the range of the panaeolus genus. The specimen was lone and dried a bit. Didn't show the teeth around the cap but had a cap shape similar to liberty caps, although not related (naturally...).

We had a lot of the unknown florida panaeolus back in June at the same locality. I have not seen it since then. It's been kinda dry out here with the storms messing things up. Fungus just vanished all at once it seemed now with other stranger types showing up such as a pink salmon colored big white mushroom, etc.
