newbies dont give up! cyans!
    #3227846 - 10/07/04 03:39 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

well just as i was thinking about giving up the hunting until we got better weather what did i see peeking out of some foliage but

i got hundreds of them   i must have been the first one there because being that many of them right in the middle of [undisclosed Seattle location ]i would think they would get spotted quick.  i didnt even get all of them as it was a little conspicuous as it was.  i left quite a few for the next shroomer to come along.  they werent kidding about "fruits abundantly"

ok some questions though as this is my first haul im a little nervous.  whats the best way to dry them for later use?  and they are kinda dirty, should i wash them, and how because getting them wet will make them take longer to dry wont it?  ok thanks all and dont give up newbies they are out there.

Cool!

I'd clean them gently now, dry them and finish the cleaning process after they are dry.

To dry use a dehydrator at 90-110F, the lower the better. If you don't have a dehydrator try a fan and screen. After they get crispy finish the drying by placing them in a sealed container with a desiccant.

I have cyans popping up in Oregon with 70-80F highs, mid 40F lows weather. Whoever says they need a cold shock isn't aware of all of the facts.

I'll post some pics soon. They are just pins now.

Joshua

nice find

I edited out the specific location, I know it's pretty common knowledge, but I don't think it's a good idea to have it mentioned here...

also, don't pull them up outta the mulch like that, go get a little pair of scissors and cut them at the base if you want to see future flushes from the patch. an added advantage to this is that they stay much cleaner and you dont have to wash them before drying/eating...

I would not use the oven, most ovens get too hot. You want to dry them gently and with low heat.

yup, oven drying isn't such a good idea. I just set them out on some paper or cardboard in a dry place for a few days.

I was looking at your images. Do you think that there might be more than one kind of mushroom there? It might be the image on my end, but some of the stems look stringy and almost irridescent looking. Some caps look too dark. You probably know what your doing though.

Peace.

drying is pretty easy though... a friend of mine used a shoe box and put a couple computer fans on it so you get constant circulation... WORKED GREAT. After that process is done, put them in a sealed container with some silica jell and let them sit for a few days... they'll be good for months after that.

yeah, i dried them already.. it was surprisingly fast.. all i did was lay them out.. put a fan next to them, and one of my lamps over it for heat. i went to work and came back they were dry as a bone. oh, and why silica gel?

Silica gel is a desiccant and will suck the shrooms dry.
