Boredom, to me, is lack of stimulation. Brain food.

I do 'prevention' activities with whole classes of 6th grade kids. One lesson is on feelings (emotions, not sensations). I tell them that Boredom is an emotion that prevents one from 'digging,' 'getting into,' or being curious about whatever is being offered in the moment. In other words, the refusal to become stimulated (as Frog said) by classroom instruction because they would rather be stimulated by the sight of the kid in front of them, a GameBoy, doodling, music, daydreams, cutting-up or just about anything but 'reading-writing-arithmetic.'
I have read a saying: "Boredom is the springboard to Eternity."

From a previous thread titled "Beyond the Thinking Mind".
The mind exists in a state of ?not enough? and so is always greedy for more. When you are identified with mind, you get bored and restless very easily. Boredom means the mind is hungry for more stimulus, more food for thought, and its hunger is not being satisfied.
When you feel bored, you can satisfy the mind?s hunger by picking up a magazine, making a phone call, switching on the TV, surfing the web, going shopping, or ? and this is not uncommon ? transferring the mental sense of lack and its need for more to the body and satisfy it briefly by ingesting more food.
Or you can stay bored and restless and observe what it feels like to be bored and restless. As you bring awareness to the feeling, there is suddenly some space and stillness around it, as it were. A little at first, but as the sense of inner space grows, the feeling of boredom will begin to diminish in intensity and significance. So even boredom can teach you who you are and who you are not.
You discover that a ?bored person? is not who you are. Boredom is simply a conditioned energy movement within you. Neither are you an angry, sad, or fearful person. Boredom, anger, sadness or fear are not ?yours?, not personal. They are conditions of the human mind. They come and go.
Nothing that comes and go is you.
?I am bored.? Who knows this?
?I am angry, sad, afraid.? Who knows this?
You are the knowing, not the condition that is known.

Thanks Moonshoe, but methinks that youse guys are projecting just a bit too much of the Real Thing onto me mug. I'm not very photogenic, I'm just posting the pic to get a little more personal. Maybe its a kind of parallel to the truly Cosmic 'The Word became flesh,' when our imageless words here become associated with a form. I do believe the words I compose, but if you do something really self-centered and f**ked up to me in traffic, the place where I give greater range to my Shadow, I'm just as likely to call you a "stupid ass***e" as the next guy (we don't give the finger much in Miami - too many psychos with worse road-rage and guns ).

"Reality is boring"
That is a very negative outlook. Your reality is what you make it, and if it is boring you must remember it is merely a reflection of your self. What do you consider not boring?

Trendal, you should come back and post why you think reality is boring.
I personally don't find it boring because there is always something to do. I just have to find what "it" is.

It's a very personal view, so I'll have a hard time explaining it, but I'll do my best!
Reality is only boring, to me, when I compare it to the wild fantasies of my mind. The Mind's Eye, the one I see what I think with, experiences things more profound and wonderous than anything I have encountered in "reality". Thus reality feels boring to me, when I have this richly illustrated world in my head to compare it to.
I don't think it's a negative outlook, though I can see how it might be for other people.

Your inner vision is the roadmap to constructing your reality. So, your reality is limited only by your imagination.

Somehow I don't think so, as I can imagine quite a few things (uncountable) that don't seem possible in reality.

Well, your certainly not going to sprout wings and fly, but transforming your current reality is less boring than, well, sitting around bored.

Reality includes the inner as well as the outer of course. You are typologically an Introvert if your awareness is dominated by the inner over the outer. There is a wonderful preponderance of Introverted types at the Shroomery in a predominantly extroverted American society. I am drawn out by aspects of nature - mind-expanding vistas (like standing at the edge of Point Royal at Grand Canyon and watching lightning and a plane below me at 8200 feet); or a mind-blowingly beautiful woman. Mostly, I realized on my first trip on Heavenly Blue Morning Glory seeds that the 'wheels-within-wheels' silvery-blue kaleidoscopic visions on the clouds ("Gears?!" asked my friend Ken Bergstrom, as we both seemed to see the same thing in 1971) were inner visions projected outwardly. The 'Cathedrals of Electric Colored Light,' the Mushroomically Ecstatic 'Multicolored Vaults and Arches of Eternity' are inner states of mind, and definately rival (and surpass, at least philosophically for me) the glory of nature extended in spacio-temporal dimensions (e.g., America's National Parks).
Good night everyone. It's finally Friday. Two St. Pauli Dark and two Forevermore goblets of Merlot are a Thursday extravagance tonight. The alarm clock sounds in five hours less 17 minutes.

Very correct, I'm an extreme introvert (INTP on the MBTI scale). I tend to group "reality" into two separate portions - inner and outer world. Usually when I refer to "reality" I speak of the outer world.

Thank you, Markos and Trendal.
Trendal, I think it's interesting, what you wrote, and it makes sense. If you are able to imagine or intuit things that are beyond the realms of the everyday, then I can imagine reality would be boring.
I, however, live in reality. This is not to compare in order to say one is better than the other. What is, is.
The way my brain works is that everything I see, hear, taste, etc., is very literally experienced. I think a lot, but not beyond the thoughts of computing my experiences.
When I say my brain is very literal, this means that if you said, "It's raining cats and dogs outside", I might go to the window to see if, in fact, it is raining cats and dogs. This is an exaggeration, but you get my point, I will presume.
I don't have much imagination, as I imagine Trendal must have. I act in and respond to reality, and it is reality that I thrive upon, especially since I can't think beyond reality too much.
There are advantages to this that work for me in the area of law, as you can probably surmise.
To me, reality is what is happening. It is not my interpretation, although I'm sure we've had this discussion, even recently. I experience outside events, and I usually act upon those events, precisely.
If I'm bored, I have to go stir up events so that I can be entertained. I can't imagine think them up, or get caught up into my mind in a way so as I am taken away by my mind.

You are very much the Extrovert
I tend to live "in my head" most of the time, and for me thinking is more important than experiencing. My thoughts are not literal or concrete...much more abstract in nature.
For me, when I'm bored, I just lay back and close my eyes

If I laid back and closed my eyes in order to think, I would get lost in tumultuous thoughts of what happened yesterday, today, and what will happen tomorrow. I see it all in images rather than thoughts, and each image flies by at a such a rapid pace that sometimes I will become depressed and not even remember why.
So, I need to be distracted with "reality."
But how does this all tie in with "Im bored"?
When we're bored, our minds are not entertained. So we look for entertainment elsewhere, whether in our own minds or in the reality that we see.
One thing I can do, and I used to do it often until I bought a digital cable that connects from my cell phone to my laptop and enables me to go online, is if I am sitting somewhere, like court, and it's not my turn, and I have to wait, I will close my eyes and remember a pleasurable experience with someone (no, not sex!) and I will replay that scene over and over again, exactly as it happened. I relive it. I've been accused of sleeping in court.
Now, of course, with the digital cable, I can sit in court or in a depo and go online and be entertained by the www. Just have to remember to say "I OBJECT" every so often.

I too am an INTP, and my Lady as well. I am closer to the median line on the scale, while my Lady is more extremely introverted. I also have more of a social need to be with people than she does. Mind you, I'm not one to paint my face and stand half naked screaming at football games, but I like to socialize on weekends (though, of course, we very rarely find people that we can TALK with). Please do us INTP's all a favor and use the word 'reality' with the adjectival 'inner' and 'outer.' My late Father, representative of the extroverted main culture, always accused me of living in 'a fantasy world.' This ALWAYS had the perjorative connotations of being childish, irresponsible or 'crazy.' My Father was a simple man and very concrete in his thinking. Ideas are not 'real' to such people who fail to understand that ALL inventions and creations of Humankind began as ideas. Such thinking only acknowledges the visible side of reality - kind of like the Captain of the Titanic only noticing little cute pointy icebergs above the surface

Trendal maybe you should try and travel more, and meditate in exotic countries?
If you cant afford it go and explore the nearest secluded bit of nature you can find, as I get older I find I am noticing and appreciating lots more tings in nature, small tings that most people would not give a second glance at, open your mind man! Being able to clsoe your eyes and see scenes you create in your mind is a skill I'd love to have, but do you realy wanna limit your life experience to day dreaming?

Acutally I go on at least one nature hike per week
Here's one of the most interesting looking plants I've seen, found last week in a forest near my house:
Please don't think that I am saying the world around me is not amazing..because I would be a fool to say that. There are things in this universe that make me numb with awe!
Though that doesn't change the fact that my external world is far less richly illustrated than my inner world

Yeah, what's more is that I couldn't find another plant like it anywhere in the forest! That is a WILD color for a berry! The rest of the plant was just plain green...except for that little bunch of white berries on a red stem.

Wow.. crazy berries. Haven't run across that one myself. Once a friend and I were out in the woods shroomin.. we started discussing how neat it'd be if there was a perfect mushroom -- something that stood out easily, tasted great, and made ya trip hhhhaaard. Flourescent green, shaped like a mario bros mushroom, tastes like bacon -- that'd be great! well then we found one that looked like what we had been describing... (of course, we did decide that while that was quite a coincidence, we probably shouldn't eat it. in ben's words "Man, that's probably poison as fuck. I bet god put that there just to toy with me.." and then he looked up and yelled "DAMMN YOU! WHY MUST YOU TAUNT ME SO!" .. he's a weird one)
I'm constantly bored. Well, currently, I'm almost constantly bored. I'm not a fan of -just- sitting around watching TV.. I'm on the internet constantly, now, while watching tv.. playing games and posting. Back in 'bama I didn't have dsl so I watched tv and read books. Averaged about 6 a month, too...
Really it's only a problem when my attention is required fully somewhere I don't wish it -- ie, at work. At least in class I can sit there and think about something else. Tehn again, some of the jobs I've had I could do that too.. but usually it's not hard to find something interesting. Till you run out of interesting things, which I'm starting to do now.. narr.
