Preperation differences

Ok, The first batch of jars I had mixed the substrate differently (PF-tek). Instead of wetting the vermiculite first and then adding the brf I mixed it all together from the start, I added water to brf and vermiculite at the same time. The problem I am having is they arnt starting to colonize at all and it has been about two weeks! So I realized my mistake and did it the right way, and within two or three days my new jars were colonizing. But why is there a difference? why is it so important to add the brf after wetting the vermiculite?

In my opinion, I don't see what order you mix them in making any difference - as long as they are thoroughly mixed and in the correct proportions....The first mistake must have been something else....

>In my opinion, I don't see what order you mix them in making any difference There is a difference, although I can't explain the dramatic difference Leukoism experienced: When you wet the vermiculite first and then add BRF, the vermiculite gets coated very evenly with a layer of BRFand you hardly get any clumps. Also the mixing effort to achieve an uniform substrate is MUCH less.

I have found this to be true.
Even though it is a b i t c h to measure out each jars ingredients individually, wet the verm, mix it up evenly, then add BRF, then repeat (for every single jar or container) - It is worth it!
You end up with a more consistent moisture/nutrient content from jar to jar and you will have a consistent fast colonization time.
Say you're doing 10 jars, I wouldn't recommend multiplying the recipe by 10, throwing it all in a big bowl, mixing and distributing to the jars. I believe this would cause inconsistent colonization from jar to jar.
Come to think of it, I don't recall any one suggesting you do that (but people think up weird ideas all the time).... Like internet contams?!?!?!

That doesn't make sense to me.
If you put all the ingredients in one big bowl, it would be impossible to control exactly how much mosture and how much nutrients get in each jar. Human error is too great. You saying you can mix it and distribute it as evenly as measuring cups?
If you do each jar individually, you are guaranteed the exact same content in each jar.
Anno, I have a feeling you're right because you know way more than me, I just want to understand how this works.

I have tried mixing it all different ways, and the best solution for me was to mix the BRF and verm together first. mix the snot out of them, and then slowly add water. this kept the BRF from clumping and my jars have been amazing so far.

I guess different things work for different people.
Verm and water first then brf
or verm and brf then water
All jars at once
or One at a time
Whatever works for you I guess.

Sorry to bump this thread but TD is curious about this, what I said a few posts up^^^^^^

That seems like too much trouble to me. I think he is thinking about it too much. As long as you mix thoroughly, the substrate should be even.
When you mix brownie batter, do you get some brownies that have clumps of egg, and some that have clumps of powder? No.

If you prepare each jar individually, you'd still suffer from difference in water saturation of parts of vermiculite. Oviously this difference is within the tolerance for mycelium growth since it most jars do so well. And since the goal of the formula is not max saturation, the excessively damp jars from large batch should be within the tolerance considering excess water will be absorbed by extra verm layer during sterilization.
Okay, enough mumbo jumbo. If you give enough stirs, each vermiculite will be at just about same saturation point due to water transfer from wet to dry via capillary action. I think. So, if you are worried about differences, just stir a whole bunch more. I think it's called mixing. I could be wrong, though.
