Saint Steven
    #3223428 - 10/06/04 03:51 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Saint Stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes,
Country garden in the wind and the rain,
Wherever he goes the people all complain.

Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline.
Did it matter, does it now? Stephen would answer if he only knew how.
Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell,
Hell halfway twixt now and then,
Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.

Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing "What for?" across the morning sky.
Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye.

Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow,
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned.
Several seasons with their treasons,
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own.
Did he doubt or did he try? Answers aplenty in the bye and bye,
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills,
One man gathers what another man spills.

Saint Stephen will remain, all he's lost he shall regain,
Seashore washed by the suds and foam,
Been here so long, he's got to calling it home.

Fortune comes a crawlin', calliope woman, spinnin' that curious sense of your own.
Can you answer? Yes I can. But what would be the answer to the answer man?

Steven Gaskin, that dude who had a masia complex, and started The Farm, a oldschool hippie commune which is still around today.

"messiah complex" ?
puh-leez...
have you read any of his stuff?
have you met the guy?
he is a sweet guy; his wife ina may is a lovely lady...
he was a little bit older than a lot of the kids on the haight... he had done the peyote before owsley set up his manufacturing facilities... once the scene was fully fueled, and the neighborhood was filled, and the bands were filling the halls every weekend, and "owsley & charly, twins of the trade, came to the poet's room", and finally comes monday, & if ya had a job to pay the bills for the pads you'd do your 8 hours & back to the pad for some macrobiotic dinner... and monday night, monday night the halls were empty of musical acts... and stephen had studied semantics under hayakawa, and done sesshin with suzuki roshi, and pilot-sampled the next batch of owsley finest, and helped re-connect to earth any number of lsd&god-intoxicated hippies freeeeaking out at the fillmore auditorium (while sufi sam led derevish dances in the back of the hall the the dead's snaky improv with pigpen's blues wailin' thru the smoke-filled air... come monday night, and some of the haight kids still reeling from their weekend epiphanies would come on in to the empty hall while stephen sat on the stage & helped them figure out just exactly what the visions and ecstasies of friday or saturday night were actually maybe all about... and what to do about it, and how we can integrate this holy juice that's flowing strong into our lives and into our world...
monday night class, dude...
and when the speedfreaks & junkies & some seriously dangerous predators moved into hashbury, and the bands generally got the hell out to marin county, and the diggers couldn't boost enough goodies to keep the free kitchens full enough for all the teenaged runaways (who were "sure to wear some flowers in your hair"), well the scene was done... finished.. kaput...
and stephen got a bunch of the folks who were monday night class crew, and they pooled their paychecks & savings & profits & bought a bunch of school busses, and HIT THE ROAD JACK looking for that green place to stay parked...
and in TN found a decent plot of land & parked...
and grew soybeans & did a little lumbering & built houses & published books (including "the big dummy's guide to CB) & welcomed hippie chicks who were knocked up (& boyfriends if along with) & couldn't get or didn't want to get abortions... and fed the mommas-to-be on good organic veggie food, and she & baby could stay on & be part of the community, or so long & you both take care, or even goodbye mama and we'll take totally excellent care of your baby until he/she is grown up human & healthy... & tried to realize (make real) that we are all one... & the spirit blows through us all like the the wind blows through through the green wheat in the fields...

that's no "messiah complex"... just a decent man who did (& still does) his best to live his life per the cosmic truths that (if we are lucky enough) we can occasionally glimpse in our more ummmm exalted states...

~

anyway, hunter & gaskin say it's not about him...
but sufficiently good verse often has enough ambiguity in it to accomodate many interpretations, eh?

I don't know why you're addressing that to me man, I didn't say it, I was just questioning what the origional poster meant, I wasn't bright enough to connect massia with messiah.

ummm, ok, maybe my posting-response-aim was a li'l off...

anyways, i associate the term "messiah complex" with characters more like, i dunno, jim jones, david koresh, or bagwan shri rashneesh (osho), or mel lyman, or charlie manson, or even joseph smith...

~

(noiw, per jim jones & the peoples' temple masscre/suicide down in guyana:
gaskin wrote about the mass suicide, shortly after it happened...
the farm folks were mostly transplanted hippies, moved from SF to TN in the early 70s...
the peoples' temple folks were also SF folks (maybe a little bit older, a little more likely to be black), from the same area of town (near haight & ashbury); & probably looking for something a little bit closer to ummmm traditional mainstream spirituality... and jones led his people from SF to central america in the early-mid 70s, and reverend jones proceeded to (as stephen might put it) start copping peoples' heads...
and when they killed a visiting american congressman, and then forced everybody to drink the poison punch ("cuz the US gummint is comin' to shut us down"), well... everybody got to die that day...
and it shook them hippies at the farm for sure, 'cause , hell, they prolly knew a whole lotta them folks freshly dead in guyana, from back in the day (late 60s) in sanfran...
~
well, that's it for today's mini-history lesson / gnrmi, hehheh...)
