Myths about gun control
    #320760 - 05/19/01 08:08 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

http://www.sas-aim.org/education/ninemyths.htm#*%20Myth%20#1

Here's a snippit for those who don't want to read the whole link:

Data, not histrionics

One-third of Americans live in the 22 progressive states that have reformed laws to allow good citizens to readily protect themselves outside their homes. [26,27] In those states crime rates are lower for every category of crime indexed by the FBI Uniform Crime Reports. [11] Homicide, assault, and overall violent crime are each 40% lower, armed robbery is 50% lower, rape is 30% lower, and property crimes are 10% lower. [11] The reasonable reform of concealed weapon laws resulted in none of the mayhem prophesied by the anti-self-defense lobby. In fact, the data suggest that, providing they are in the hands of good citizens, more guns "on the street" offer a considerable benefit to society - saving lives, a deterrent to crime, and an adjunct to the concept of community policing.

One.

I do not like guns.

Two.

ALl criminals do not want a gun that is registered in the first place. So all gun laws are stupid.

Having a registered gun leads the cops to the person who registered the gun to begin with.

Three.

No criminal wants a gun registered to someone else.

So he will file off the serial number of a particular gun to be used in a crime.

FOur.

There are millions of guns out there with no registration at all.

Hahahahahahaha.. Fuck Charletoinb Heston and the NRA and Moses too.

Trying to talk logic, no matter how much proof in facts you have, to the Extreme Left-wingers is like trying to convince the pope to support abortion. We've had this detailed argument plenty of times with no convincing....

Charlton Heston is God.......Though Ted Nugent is pretty cool as well

I thought people who wanted guns were left wingers (more personal freedom)? whereas people who want access to guns restricted were more right wing (less personal freedom)?

please explain

liberals, socialists, and Democrates tend to oppose guns and they are on the left of the imaginary center. This is true in the United states, as for other countries i don't know. On the right (if there's only 2 directions) Libertarians, conservatives and Republicans tend to (almost all the time) agree with gun ownership and find it a right as written in the U.S.'s 2nd amendment in the Bill Of Rights.....is that a little clearer?

You have your directions screwed up.. the left, liberals, democrats etc tend to favor less personal freedom and more gov't regulations and programs. One notable exception is abortion, they tend to be prochoice rather then prolife. The right, conservatives, republicans and way to the right are ppl like me, libertarians which tend to favor as much personal freedom as possible, lower taxes etc.

Republicans like to instill morality into society, they regulate same-sex marriages, abortions, try to implement religion, and other things that their bible says. Libertarian all the way =)

I've heard it put best this way:

The Democrat's are tyrants, the Republican's are religious tyrants.

And they're pretty much the same on every issue. I think its a conspiracy and they just bitch back and forth to eachother so nothing ever gets done :) I mean really... what do they differ so much on, abortion, thats about it.

I like this analogy better:

The only difference between democrates and republicans is one wants to remove your rights faster than the other.

Democrats want big government in the workplace, Republicans want big government in the home.

One of the only reasons why a country as small as the u.s. has maintained its "freedom" is the largest malitia in the universe. nobody wants to invade a country that has a gun for every citizen.
If anyone comes to my house to hurt my family they will be killed, and that is the way it should be.
other than that...
I learned when I was a kid to respect firearms.
I dont let my kids play with toy guns. alot of people think toy guns are no big deal, but alot of kids get comfortable looking down the sights of a gun and seeing a human, and without thaught squeezing a plastic trigger. I learned to never point a gun loaded, unloaded, real , fake didnt matter a gun is a gun.
I also live in an area where everyone probably has a gun or grew up with a gun in there house.

if even 20% of people carried guns the crime rate would plummit. would you rob somebody if there was a 20 percent chance that they would shoot you? would you pull out a gun in a subway if 20 percent of the other passengers would shoot back?

check history and see what happens to countries that outlaw guns.

If guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns.
so go out and get yourself a big fat redhawk 45and take it to the range, unless you are an outlaw

I agree with you...

The US is the Third largest country in the world both for population and area. So we're anything but a small country.

>I learned when I was a kid to respect firearms.

Me too. I also heard a good statement after becoming an adult that I like and believe to be true. It obviously doesn't apply to 3 year olds but here it is:

A child who is taught to respect firearms is no more likely to shoot themselves (or someone else) than they are likely to run out into oncoming traffic on a freeway.

"If guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns"

well said....and if there was 20 % people carying gun: yes it is probably true that at first time, there would be more accidents and deaths caused by firearms at first, but after an "evolution", bad guys would deffinitelly be outweight, and that is the most important :)

Just because China is bigger doesn't make the US a small country.

> >I learned when I was a kid to respect firearms.

> A child who is taught to respect firearms is no more likely to shoot themselves (or someone else) than they are likely to run out into oncoming traffic on a freeway.

delete the "or someone else" and I'd agree with you.

I know to respect knives, scissors ("don't run with scissors"), ice picks, guns, gasoline, etc. I still want to kill people. My respect for a weapon has no direct effect on my likelihood to commit homicide.
