a few questions...
    #3222722 - 10/06/04 02:45 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My cat has a mycobag that was probably about 70 % colonized, so he mashed it up to make sure the inside would get colonized, but it hasn't grown back w/ myc. and that was a few weeks ago. It seems like the bag has too much moisture in it (the bottom and sides are kinda goopy/slimmy) but it still doesnt look like its contaminated. Is there a way he can help it colonize again, like maybe dry the bag up or something, or is he doomed?

Also how important is light for a fully colonized cake, like does it need 12 hours of light a day or is about 3-4 good? And how long until you normally see pins, and then full mushies? (average time)

~~~~~~~~~~~thanks for the help~~~~~~~
i'm sad to hear it's not colonizing again, are your temps at a good place (85 degrees is perfect)?
when trying to introduce pinning, i'd suggest at least a 12 on/12 off lighting schedule. i use a 12/12 for pinning now, and switch to 6/18 after they grow up a smidgen... they seem to get beefier that way. i was using an 18/6 for pinning, but it was too much of a hassle for me.
good luck!
EDIT -
whoops, missed a few questions. it takes a week or two (took a week and a half for my most recent 2 casings) for pinning, then probably a week (maybe + a few days) to get full grown.
Sounds like a bacterial contam.
70% colonised then mixed up + 3 days should = full clonisation. Is there a filter patch on the bag? Is there any air space in the bag? You best chance may actually be to cut the top off of the bag, introduce fresh air and cross your fingers...
Hmmm well i think inducing air may be a sure way to get contam, but maybe not, and it has a filter patch.
under most circumstances, you are correct. Often, if there is a bact contam, and you introduce a good amoutn of fresh air, the mycelium will defeat the contam (especially since you said it was 70% colonised).
But then again, what do i know.?.?...
How is the bag doing now, and what did you do?
good luck...
