Some help please
    #3222672 - 10/06/04 02:35 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I just tossed this casing but did some investigation before. I scraped off the casing layer and perceived a sweet honey like smell that was strong but not unpleasant, at least for me. If it was bacteria, why the grain was so healthy looking with no slime or any shit on it. The myc was strong and well attached to the grain.
Sorry but just have a pic of the casing before surgery.

Thanks

the top looks pretty healthy, other than the overlay. I would've just waited for those pins to finish.

The smell indicates contamination but it can be just superficial. A bleach dunk is a a good thing to do in such situation.
If after the dunk, the smell doesn't go away, then it's time to toss it.
Anyway, what you did is also very correct, when in doubt throw it out.

The smell was very sweet honey like and strong, but I was able to smell it after the casing layer was removed and the grain was scratched with a fork, it wasn?t present while intact and fruiting in the mini greenhouse.

That?s what I thought, but it doesn?t smell like that healthy fresh fungi aroma I?m used too. You know, from the same batch of sterilized jars, prepared the same manner, some smell fine and some this sweet honey way     :frown:
