Providing Proper Temp?
    #3222162 - 10/06/04 12:34 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I was going to start using a heating pad to keep my casing warm since it's fall and soon winter and it's starting to get cool, I was wondering though, do I want the heating pad underneath my casing, keeping the substrate warm, or do I want it somewhere else to keep the ambient are temperature at the proper temp?

...Thanks

keep the air temperature around it warm. throw the pad under the chamber. put some books or magazines inbetween to lose energy because even on the lowest setting the heat pads get too warm, especially if it is directly under your casing.

Just make sure your casing is like 70-78.

I'm not sure if you're incubating the casing or you have it in a terrarium and want to keep it 74-77F. Anyway, if you're incubating, you'll reach equilibrium beneath the foil covering the casing by just using a heating pad and magazines beneath.

Otherwise, you'll achieve much the same effect, but not as warm (which is good) by putting the pad under your terrarium. The heat inside will be even either way.

Not many people have mentioned this when talking about heating pads, but I think I should...

If you neglect to put anything between your chamber and your heating pad (I had a towel) and it was heating the sterlite up too much, conducting that right into the bottom of my jars and was preventing it from colonizing.  I even had 4 jars that didn't grow at all because they were getting way too much direct heat. (96 degrees my therm. read)  So, needless to say I ripped my jars outta there and shut the pad down.

My solution was use one layer of blanket over top of the heating pad, under the chamber, and then I used a large piece of chicken wire to create a stand for my jars to be on while incubating so they aren't in any direct contact with the heat, even if it did conduct up through the bottom of the chamber.

All in all, I came out lucky from my mistake only losing four jars out of 19.  Hopefully this will help someone not make the same mistake.

Yep, the heating won't be even unless you have a good layer inbetween the pad and the jars. Otherwise your heat is concentrating in the lower part of the jar and basically drying it out and baking it.
