When is it best to birth, when colonization is complete or move the jars to light and wait till pinning starts?

I'd do it when colonization is complete, or a couple days after, just to have some hearty mycellium. When pins form in the jar sometimes while taking the cake out (especially if its stuck good) the pins will bang hard against the glass.

Yes, I would recommend waiting 2-3 days after 100% colonization.

Thanks, I read about people doing it both ways, I was wondering which way was best.

Don't let em pin in the jars but do wait a few days after the outside finishes, the reason being you want the center of the cake to finish.

There are three things that tell a cake to pin light, air exchange, and a lack of substrate to colonize. In most cases (not all) all three things have to happen so very often the cake isn't gonna start pinning till the cake finishes colonizing the center of the cake. (It's the main reason people who are amazed at how fast their cakes colonized and put them in the chamber right away come back with the old "my cake won't start pinning posts" they have to let the center finish. This happens much faster in the incubater.

Sorry, Magesh. I thought the pinning was induced by light, drop in CO2 and temperature. No one seemes to have mentioned lack of substrate before.

Yeah I should have put temp drop but that often comes with the air exchange. Lots of people don't know about the substrate thing and it surprises me cause it's in TMC and most have read it.
