Music essential to life?
    #3221905 - 10/06/04 10:33 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

My girlfriend and I were having a debate about this particular question (she's the one who brought it up). Is music essential to life?
Before I could answer the question, I had to figure out what it truly meant. First of all, what type of essential are we talking about here. By Webster's online dictionary, essential is:

Main Entry: 1es?sen?tial
Pronunciation: i-'sen(t)-sh&l
Function: adjective
1 : of, relating to, or constituting essence : INHERENT
2 : of the utmost importance : BASIC, INDISPENSABLE, NECESSARY <essential foods> <an essential requirement for admission to college>
3 : IDIOPATHIC <essential disease> <essential hypertension>
- es?sen?tial?ly /-'sench-lE, -'sen-ch&-/ adverb
- es?sen?tial?ness /-'sen-ch&l-n&s/ noun
synonyms ESSENTIAL, FUNDAMENTAL, VITAL, CARDINAL mean so important as to be indispensable. ESSENTIAL implies belonging to the very nature of a thing and therefore being incapable of removal without destroying the thing itself or its character <conflict is essential in drama>. FUNDAMENTAL applies to something that is a foundation without which an entire system or complex whole would collapse <fundamental principles of algebra>. VITAL suggests something that is necessary to a thing's continued existence or operation <cut off from vital supplies>. CARDINAL suggests something on which an outcome turns or depends <a cardinal rule in buying a home>.

So I assume by essential that it is of upmost importance. Okay, so now we must look at what type of "life" we are talking about. Webster's online dictionary says this:

Main Entry: 1life
Pronunciation: 'lIf
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural lives /'lIvz/
Etymology: Middle English lif, from Old English lIf; akin to Old English libban to live -- more at LIVE
1 a : the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body b : a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings -- compare VITALISM 1 c : an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction
2 a : the sequence of physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual b : one or more aspects of the process of living <sex life of the frog>
3 : BIOGRAPHY 1
4 : spiritual existence transcending physical death
5 a : the period from birth to death b : a specific phase of earthly existence <adult life> c : the period from an event until death <a judge appointed for life> d : a sentence of imprisonment for the remainder of a convict's life
6 : a way or manner of living

So, are we talking about biological life? If so, I would say no, music is not essential to life. What about if it is about human life in general? Again, I would say no, since one could spend their entire life without having to listen to music. If it is talking about cultural life, than yes, music is essential to culture. My question to her was this, if music was never "invented" would we still be alive today?
Any thoughts?

A quote that may be applicable. "Necessity is the Mother of invention"

so, music is here, therefore it was a necessity. Life without music... not possible I think. That's because the way our brains work, the way our souls work. We work. Rythms, patterns, comfort us. Music is like a mental message, triggering off patterns of neurons that create emotions and lasting moods and motivations.

consider a young mother, singing a soothing melody to her child.

i agree with the above quote.

the dictionary isnt always the best place to look for answers, it is as debatable as your thoughts.

okay, i'm just being difficult. atomics weren't really invented, it's a discovery, and man manipulated it. sorry :-)

what i think is equally important to define is music... the beat of a heart is music. the sound of the wind in the leaves, the birds in the trees, that's all music to me. music is a pretty intricate concept i don't think i'm going to try to define, for fear of my head exploding. but by my concept of music, it is not just necessary to life, it's a part of life. conciousness produces music. music is the result of awareness. it is the interpretation of patterns.

I more apt to say "Laziness is the Mother of invention"
But music has become so ingrained into our culture.  We are perceiving that it is a necessity, though it is not.  I'm assuming (based on my girlfriend's explainations) that we are talking about human-made music.  If that mother never knew a song, would she sing to the baby?  If humans never made music, would we be any better/worse today.  I think not.  When you say "I can't live without music," what do you mean?  Would your body go into cardiac arrest?  All I am saying is that if we never knew music, how could it be a necessity?

Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English musik, from Old French musique, from Latin musica, from Greek mousikE any art presided over by the Muses, especially music, from feminine of mousikos of the Muses, from Mousa Muse

Here it is by Webster's account!

The Mother's of Invention made some great music...

In this period of time, in the West, definately. Entertainment in general is a base necessity for us post-modern Westerners without which we'd probably all go insane and/or on a killing spree.

In general, even for humans: no. Music might make life more agreeable, but it isn't essential for our survival.

Allyson said that, but then I said that the question is "is music essential to life," not "is music essential to your life." How do you believe the question could be worded better?

No music is invented. Like mathematical concepts, it already exists and musicians just find it.

All sculptures are already in the rock, the artist just removes the bits that don't belong.

All possible computer programs already exist, finding any one in particular is just a matter of removing/adjusting the bits that would cause the computer to crash.

i think its possible to debate that everything IS music.

Jean Fourier showed long ago that every waveform, no matter how complex, can be produced by the sum of a finite number of steady state sine waves of various frequency, amplitude, and phase.

One startling consequence of this is that, if you hook up enough sine wave generators to your stereo and set their frequency, amplitude, and starting phase just right, you can sit back and enjoy Beethoven's 5th Symphony coming from your speakers. Tweak the sine wave generators a little and you'll get AC/DC's Back In Black including the vocals instead.

Maybe everything really IS music...  :jamming:

I think life is music in motion. Look at the rythems of nature. I see our emotions as being a form of music and our movements a dance to them. Listen to the sounds of nature, your own heart beat, your voice.

I think we are living music in a way. Just my thoughts.

I think it could very well be a necessity in life.

I think we are given a sense of control when listening to music, since we know what rhythm/ patterns to expect.
