Desperately need reverse osmosis
    #3221577 - 10/06/04 04:27 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Can anybody recommend me a reverse osmosis machine so I can purify my own water...the tap water here is so very disease infested it seems.

It would be nice if I could find one for around $75, anybody?

So sick of buying gallon after gallon of distilled water!

The simplest thing would be to boil the water for 45 minutes(and then cool it down) before use. Or you could even pressure cook it.

Or just run out to a water vending machine with couple of dimes.

I'm a newb so correct me if I'm wrong, but is it really necessary to boil water since the jars are going to be pressure cooked anyway? Wouldn't that kill any disease in the water?

ok kq
ive seen a couple of different small filtration systems that you can use in the house,
www.charleysgreenhouse.com, none as cheap as you want, but things never are.
p.s. i wouldnt recommend buying water filtration stuff from ebay, or used that is.
charleys has everything a shroomer needs great resource!

eBay has some cheap units, at least compared to what it will cost at a place like Home Depot.

About 120$+s/h IIRC for a unit with tank.

It depends for what you are using it. If you are using it for jars that are going to be sterilized anyway you are probably right.
But I have read a posting of Stamets in a mailinglist archive were he wrote about his problem with infected water.
He used his water for making agar and autoclaved it for more than an hour and still had problems with bacteria (which is hard to believe for me).
If I can find that link again I will post it ...

Another suggestion:

If you don't need LOTS of purified water, you could always look at getting a small h20 purifier like a Katadyn (sp?) filter.

They're sold at camping stores, online, etc. They're completely manual, designed for purifying water from streams etc. while you're out hiking.

They only produce like a few liters or so at a time, but they're reasonably priced (I think) and reusable for 1000's of liters.

Just a thought.

You know, I think these purifiers might do more harm than good. That sense of false security you know? I'd hate to see anyone jumping out to get water purifier and waste a crop or two expecting sterile water out of them...

I'm referring to water that is used outside of jars, e.g. water for misting, vaporizer, dunking, etc.

My coolmist vape developed some real nasty kinda contams inside from shitty tap water, I've ditched it for now and stuck to my vicks vape because steamed water contains no contams.

Lots of good info here guys I will look into it, thanks.

I use tap water for everything (not the cleanest tap but drinkable just fine) but I add h202 to everything too..mister bottles, humidifiers, dunks. Except substrate which gets sterilized anyways. I have very little contam problems..

Those little filters that were mentioned are like brita filters and are simple filters for mainly chlorine and metals. You can get one that sits on the side of your sink too for like 20 bucks that you turn on your water and you can switch between your tap and the dispenser thats a little better. RO is the way to go but wow that's cheap..RO units are usually more expensive.
