Incubation Temp. Is Too Low?
    #3220369 - 10/05/04 11:14 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Right now I have my 10 PF jars incubating inside of a toolbox. It's big enough and doesn't allow for any light. My AC is always set between 70-80 and I figured inside the toolbox would be adequate. I bought a temp. guage and the temp. was 75.4F. So I decided to buy a little heating pad and I first placed it underneath the toolbox which did nothing. Then I placed it on the second layer of the toolbox, right above the layer of jars. The temp. guage says the bottom of the toolbox (where the jars are) is 78.9F. What can I do to increase the temp. further?

Put the heating pad on the level the jars sit, turn it on low, add a layer of magazine/paper towels to buffer heatflow, put jars on top of that. With that layer, it won't dry out anything.

Throw a blanket over the toolbox.

Ok, I have a towel over it right now and it's 78.9F. Ok, so put the jars directly on top of the newspaper that's directly on top of the heating pad?

Awesome. It seems to be steady at around 84.7F. I had to stack the jars on top of each other and kinda jam em in, but the temp. is good now. Thanks for the tip.

Now the temp's at 87.1 degrees. I removed the towel and made sure it was on the lowest setting possible. Hopefully it wont get any warmer.

It will get a lot warmer, my damn pad keeps getting hotter. Just seperate it more and more till its just right. With towels or magazines etc.

For optimum growth you need to maintain 86'f

but they grow just fine sitting at room temp also

My point being=you dont have to be so perfect. If you are comfortable-so are they.

Right now I've been maintaining the tempurature at about 85.6 for the past 2-3 hours. Looks like it's stabling at that temp. On the average, how many does after inoculation until one can see even the tiniest trace of colonization?

Is that true--that they'll colonize at room tempurature? Once I get the two spore syringes I ordered, I'm thinking about moving the jars currently in the incubator to a duffel bag, and innoculating the new jars (CORRECTLY!) and placing them in the incubator. (For information about what I'm talking about see: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3214994/page/1/fpart/1/vc/1)

Yes they will colonise at room temperature just fine. The growth may be slower than with the temp at 86'f,but,I have had no problems at all sitting them in my kitchen cabinets. They will still colonise pretty quick.
The best and fastest growth shows when the temp is maintained at 86'f.

My temp. guage in my incubator fluctuates between 84F and 87F. Is that acceptable?

I have mine set up at 84F. I heard 90F is bad. So, I'd keep an eye on that. I mean normal fluctuation of 3F, another 3F up upto 90F isn't far fetched.
