Jar Question
    #3218968 - 10/05/04 06:05 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Other than online, where can I find 1/2 pint jars that are suitable for the PF Tek? The jars that I have came in a "kit" and they are in use right now and I need new jars for the 2 syringes that'll be here in a day or two.

I like to talk to other growers and find out what they use so I can go search for it once I am at a local market. Moreover, the person that made the recommendation above named a price, so I figured he was speaking about a specific type of jar and figured I'd ask what kind.

They are unfindable in this country.

I bought jam. Lots and lots of pretty expensive jam. And French jam at that. The checkout girl looked at me in disgust... (fat, rich, jam eating bastard) and none of these are even true.

I went to Wal-Mart. Got the tapered wide-mouth 1/2 pint jars. $6.46 for the dozen.

No walmart, k-mart or anything resembling that here. Just Jusco and AEON. Non of them had it. I looked for salsa like jars, but didn't find that either. Finally at 99c store(it's actually called 100 yen plaza) I found 270ml jars with hard plastic lids. I bought 1 and tested the lid in steamer for 2 hours. It worked out for me. I know 99c stores in CA have similar selection of glass stuff.

Anyways, good luck.

Sam

just look for kerr, ball, or any other wide mouthed jar. pint or half pint works. hell, i've even used straight glass cups with just an aluminum foil lid before.

you want that wide mouth so you can get the cakes out easily.

In addition to walmart and hardware stores, most of our grocery stores carry canning jars.

It's very regional. Some states, everyone will have them, others no one. I live in the no one zone. It's a pretty big city but the only jars I've ever seen here are Kerr 1/4 pints at Walmart. Yep, 1/4 :/

those 1/4 pint jars could be useful for your casings... wouldn't it, Ayrios?

BTW, I don't think less of you, was just shocked to see you going at it. All good now, though.

Funny, last year around january I tried looking all over for them. Nothing. Once in a while some 4 pint jars. Even walmart only had those. This past month they're everywhere, canning season, and for 5-6 bucks a dozen.

I went to a bunch of Targets and Wal-Marts and they did having canning supplies and 1/2 pint jars. However, they were NOT the correct wide mouth jars required. Then one day I was leaving a grocery store and on the shelves on the back side of all the registers they had a bunch of Ball canning supplies, luckily I decided I should look because I found exactly the kind of wide mouth jars needed!! I was so excited. Started talking to the cashier, the same lane I was just in, about canning food...if he only knew my plans hahaha  :mushroom2:

They were tall and skinny wide mouths, most the pictures I have seen are shorted and wider jars. But I just read a few other threads where people have said that that is not a problem. Correct me if I am wrong though! I need that info too haha.

A new tek is to use the Glad and Ziplock type plastic containers.  Much easier to find if you can not find canning jars. They come in all sizes and are easy to use. They can withstand the temps of steaming and presure cooking (though plastic may distort a little in the PC). You can also find them in larger sizes for bulk.
