I've heard this about a thousand times, as I'm sure everyone else has. Someone always knows someone who was met someone who had LSD/Shrooms and never came out of the trip and spent the rest of their lives in a mental institution (or some sort of similair crap). Personally, I highly doubt this is possible as I have never met anyone first hand that this happened to, nor have I ever found any reliable source that confirms it (E.g. erowid, shroomery etc.) I think it's some scary shit that gets spread around like wild-flower. Possibly started to scare people out of doing such drugs, possibly an extreme exageration (ever played Chinese whispers?) of the fact that often people learn alot on trips and arn't quite the same after a large dose, this not being due physicly/chemically to the actual drug at all, more their new perspective that the drug showed them.
I am no expert on this, but will remain skeptical until someone shows me proof or I meet someone that this has happened to. 'It happened to a friend of a friend' or 'it happened to someone I know' is just not evidence, as a third party recount is not proof of anything, apart from the fact that someone is claiming something outlandish. A word on evidence: this does not include witnesses or the spoken word of some tripper I don't even know. Medical journals or scientific papers (although they're not even really concrete proof) would be excepted. I strongly suspect It's a college myth. Anyone care to correct me (by offering evidence or a reliable source)? observations, comments?
On a slightly unrelated topic, what are the negative aspects of shrooming? Is there any evidence that it's bad for your health or dangerous? I know people say 'it frys your brains', but does it really? Are there any reliable articles on this? I've never felt anything but refreshed and clear headed after shroom effects wear off. It sure isn't cancer-causing (unless smoked) and I seem to be just as cluey as I was before I ever tripped. What's the go? Is this the perfect drug?

a homeless kid i met in NYC knows this guy who had a sheet of LSD in his shirt pocket and he went through a sprinkler and the LSD got into him and he thought he was a glass of orange juice and he was walking around for weeks trying not to spill himself and somebody bumped into him and knocked him over and he died because he thought he spilled
so don't EVER walk through sprinklers with a sheet of LSD in your shirt pocket
incidentally---am i the only one here who want to trip permanently and never come back from that state of perception?

I still see slight tracers since after my 3rd acid trip. A close relative of mine is obviously completely insane after coming back from a 3 day fest. No scientific proof that I can give you, though.

Thats bullshit. If you get 'stuck in a trip', your not trippin'. You just went skitso is all. And that's only because you were skitso or very week minded to begin with.. My one friend I no longer talk to used to always bring this up. He also told me about the conspiracies that he heard about. The governemt created LSD and uses it for mind control over the ppl. Fucking e head is what he is. Not my trouble though.. You don't get stuck in trips. Period!

I used to think it would be nice to just trip forever. Its such a great experience, so why the hell not? Well, soon you learn, that state of perception sticks with you anyways. So there is no need..

Seeing tracers, mental expansion, awareness of a hell of a lot more things around you, etc.. are all common. Ever look at a street light at night? How many colors do you see? They are all really there, your not halucinating. Bet you could never see that before trippin'..

Are you sure you still see tracers? Not like the sensation everyone gets like writing your name with a fire stick in the night? If so, how much did you take? and what was it (shooms/sid)? As for your relative going on a 3 day fest - no fucking wonder. That's blatant abuse.

personally id hate to trip the rest of my life...the other day i felt like life itself is just too long of a trip, not enjoyable. and the acid state of mind is only fun for a while but id kill myself if i had to trip the rest of my life away.

I know two people who are right now fucked in the head ever since they last dosed, not that it was all the acids fault but the cid surely put them over the edge, one was tweeking one week straight and the other was always alittle skitzo i believe, and the tweeker one is to this day in a mental health institute.
It can happen.

Alot of it is urban mythology. Everyone seems to have read about some guy a friend saw at a festival who thought he was a glass of orange juice, invariably. Like the replies say below, depends greatly on the tripper and ther mental state. However it has happened - the most famous case being Syd Barrett, former Pink Floyd Frontman. But then again he lived on little more than LSD and cups of tea for most of his twenties. Anything in excess will mess you up. There was a guy who died from a carrot overdose.

Yah, I was just ganna mention good old Barrett. He just took it waaaaaay overboard. Though ppl used to dose him all the time without him knowing it. Btw, it was coffea he dropped his acid in, not tea. Though tea would make more sense since he was english. I heard they also had a little cat that they used to dose all the time. I think Watters said that in an interview one time. hehe ;-)

ya poor barrett...he was one of the first in england to use acid and they didnt have much info on it then so i guess he figured it wouldnt screw him up to use it chronically...sucks he was a genius too...
