dry substrate?
    #3217829 - 10/05/04 01:04 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Greetings:

I have three PF TEK 1/2 pint jars almost fully permeated with mycellium after about 20 days: a few more days and I ought to be able to birth them.

The one remaining jar is 3/4 permeated with the remaining part (constituting a pie-slice like section) non-inhabited.

I am guessing that this is a dry spot in the substrate which is preventing the permeation. Does it make sense to reinject that portion of the jar with sterile H2O in order to hydrate? Or just be patient and let the process proceed?

I can post a photo if that would help.

Thanks.

Just be patient, jars can sometimes stall. Try flipping it over.

I agree with scat's reply of flippng the jars.  Re-innoculation might introduce contams.  Flip and see how things grow for a couple days, if that particular spot still looks stalled, cut it out with a sterile knife in a sterile room and dunk in diluted h2o2 and begin birthing in that fashion. Birthing cakes with stalled areas can only lead to contams later down the road.

good luck

Thanks for the quick reponses!

This leads me to ask just what constitutes a fully populated mycellium jar.

My other three jars have very small areas which in which the substrate is visible, even in small specks. This seems to be at the top of the jars. Otherwise they appear fully permeated including the bottoms of the jars. And those top areas might be because the dry vermiculite inserted as the final step in the TEK before sealing is visible.

I would tend to err on the side of patience and give them a few days to fully populate.

Any comments appreciated from the more experienced.

Thanks!

When in doubt, wait it out.

If you think that the top might not be fully colonized, wait another two days, then birth.
