what kinda amanita
    #3215145 - 10/04/04 07:57 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Found these in a yard, along with some lbms on cowshit..
amanita description:
yellow cap with light discolorations, convex, with patches, white and yellow patches.
gills are free white/yellow
stem thick, flaring - almost pendant, bulbous but seems there is a cup on most of them (prominently in the young ones), fibrous yellow/white stem, hollow! if you need more info, let me know
stem size: 2-6 inches
cap size: 2-7 inches (broke the large cap, but its a biggun!)

found these two shrooms on a cow dung pile area at a farm:

as far as these two shrooms, I think I got jumpy and thought they were liberties, cause of their location (on dung), and color (dark brown etcetc)

So what kinda amanita have I found do you think?

so, I have read you can smoke the cap skins with salvia, sugg. 2cm square and a few grams of salvia feels pretty relaxing, euphoric.

Any other suggestions? I am also going to wait for a few more responses from others for a positive ID..

I left a few of the immature ones there to grow larger, so I can hopefully pick them in a few days.

I don't know about smoking Amanita's, but my experiences with salvia were certainly not relaxing or euphoric. Salvia is a very wierd experience. Enlightening maybe, relaxing not a chance.

Update: Spore print on one seems to be a dirty white/grey (possibly due to the dirt, and wetness?)

Could use another expert on identifying just to verify before I toss these in the garbage =/ (like I do with alot of useless shroomies I pick and look at later)

They don't look quite right to me. A little to much color on the stems. The yellow anulus is especially troubling. I don't play with Amanitas and am not an expert on them, but I think those are the wrong kind.

I concur. It turns out there are a lot more A. muscaria look alikes than we thought there were. Notice how those Amanitas don't have concentric rings at the base. Concentric rings are a key identifying feature in A. muscaria.

See the rings at the base of the mushroom in these pictures?

Any mushroom that you suspect is A. muscaria should display these concentric rings. If they do not, it is not Amanita musciara and could possibly contain Amatoxins(which destroy your liver). Do not take chances with Amanitas, if you do you are risking a very slow and painful death. That is unless you've got a liver donor set up, but then again, surgery to have your liver replaced is no fun either.

Bottom line: don't fuck with Amanitas you are unsure of.

Thanks for the info and tips!
Wasnt't too sure yet, but they are definately interesting, and one of the caps are HUGE! As far as those rings, the veil wasnt quite right? Or is it about the rings near the boot? I did see some, but not very strong rings that veiled up at the bottom of the boot.

Not trying to make something what it isnt, but I am highly interested in a solid ID.

Spore print did turn out white indeed, with a hint of color draining from the cap around the edges, but they are moist.

Fuck dude, It's a good damn thing I haven't eaten the ones I found, cause now I'm not to sure.I found them under pine trees, and I had read that Amanita Muscaria has very few look alikes and are easy to distiguish from those those that look similar,I had no Idea that there were look alikes that looked that similar, so I was all confident that I found the right ones. I found a shit load of them and dried them out in my oven, I took a bunch of pictures before hand though so I'll post the pictures as soon as I can get to a scanner,so you guys can tell me what you think, because mine look almost just like his.

one more thing though, if those aren't Amanita Muscaria Formosa, then what might else they be exactly?

ToxicMan recently posted a list of names of look-a-likes that you can search for.

It's important to remember that a lot of mushroom species have not been described and named yet, let alone tested for toxicity, so it is not always possible to ID a given specimen to species. That's why you will often see "IDs" that take the via negativa: "Those are not active" or "Those are not Amanita muscaria."

When I first started hunting mushrooms I tried to identify every mushroom I found, but quickly realized that most of them were not in my field guide. The mushrooms you found are not Amanita muscaria. If you really want to know what species they are you have a lot of work to do, including microscopic observations and chemical tests, the results of which you must then compare against all the known yellow amanitas; this will require a trip to a university library........

Most of us would rather spend our time hunting for the known good species.

Peace

yep, finding out that trying to identify everything I see is a waste of time, soo, im just reading about finds, looking at ALL pictures of finds, and maybe my next trip out will be more learned and less wasted.

It was quite a rush finding that though, and I found my first destroying angel later that day. Thanks for the tips and hints, your keepin me alive!

The way that I approach an ID is to just worry about genus first. Even if the species is not listed in any of your guides, it is still possible to use the keys and other info to narrow something down to at least a genus. After I've found the genus name then I will check all of my books for a species. I rarely feel comfortable with an ID to species because within most genera there are many species that are much alike.

After i get a genus, I will assign the species a name. I'll call it "species A" or 1, something like that. This way, I will know how many species within a given genus that I am finding. After I establish a collection of photos and descriptions, I can then use that as a resource.

fuck it, this just doesn't even seem worth the trouble, I guess I just thought it would be cool to take something that I just found growing naturally in my own area, but the experience doesn't even sound that great, and now I'm being told that I can't be sure what I have is even what I thought it was, without further testing which I really don't have time for right now, so I'll save my time and my liver for what I already know is good. well, I got a couple dried ounces of these damn things, so if someone else wants to take the time and energy to identify them, then pm me and for the cost of shipping I'll send you what I got along with the pictures I took of them before I dried them out, otherwise I'm just gonna through them in the trash. thank you all for the info though.
