Massive grain inoculation

Hi everybody, I've got a PF filter patch bag a little more than half filled with brown rice and finch seed. I've made 3 syringes of PESA from a priny about the size of a quarter. I've sterilized the grain but it's a lot, and i've never innoculated something that large before. Shold i use 1 syringe, 2, all 3? Or is it not even gana work?

It's often easier to spawn a large bag of substrate with a chunk of mycelia from a cake, for example. Straight inoculation into a large grow bag can work, but in my experience it can take a LONG time, and that's assuming things don't dry up before total colonization. If you're working with a lot of medium, you can use the whole syringe for faster colonization, even faster with 2 or 3, but that's really a waste. Also, if you use a whole syringe (not necessary) make sure to take into account the water in the syringe when adding water to your bulk medium.

Why don't you use honeywater as a medium to create mycellium from spores, then add the honeywater+mycellium to your birdssed jar. Mycellium grows very fast in honeywater , to make it even a little faster you can use a eating pad and set it to 32?c aprox. Cheers, MAIA == :) Spread the Spores :) ==

MAIA... Are you telling me that a straight inoculation of spores from a syringe into honey water will create mycellium? Would I need to pasterize/sterilize the honey water. If so, for how long and what PSI. What ratio of honey water and water would I have to use? =) - Celsius

For honey water I use 1 tbs per quart jar of bioled water and presure cook for an hour at 15 PSI. probably over kill but overkill os better than under kill. Let cool till cool to touch. add 3cc's H2O2 and spores (I usualy use 2cc's). shake every day at least once. Growth should be very noticable in 3 to 4 days. got another question guys. By giant bag looks like it may have a few drops of excess water already and i havent innoculated yet. How do i dry out the bag without opening it?

If I wuz you I'd try innoculating a small jar of substrate first, just to make sure your syringes are sterile. It would be a shame to waste a whole filter bag of substrate. I mean, you don't know what sort of unsterile fool made that print;) Your substrate if definitely too wet if you can see pooling water. That's just begging for wetspot. ------------------------------------ Old Donkeys don't die, they go to: Drool Donkey IslandEdited by Champion des Champignons on 05/21/01 05:21 PM.

No. H2O2 Can slow down fungal growth but isn't fatal. It's the only way to get rid of contams. No H2O2 and it's a goner.

Yes, peroxide will kill spores. That's why you wait until you see mycelial growth to inject some in. It will slow down the production of more mycelium but it will hopefully kill any nasties that may have made it in with the mushie spores. Eventually, the peroxide will be broken down by the mycelium and growth will return to normal. A whole hour at 15psi is probably overkill in the sense that the honey might carmalize and become less useful as a mycelium starter. I would go with 30 minutes, just like if you were sterilizing agar or something.
