Need ID For Mushrooms I Picked
    #3214436 - 10/04/04 03:16 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I Went mushroom hunting today on a horse trail. I found many mushrooms matching the description of active mushrooms. This was my first time picking shrooms, so I would like some help identifying them, so me and my girlfriend dont eat the wrong kind, and die. Please help someone.

Here is a pic of the bunch we gathered, growing from horse crap.

Heres a better description of the mushrooms, sorry....

1. Adirondack mountains, New York, growing in horse feces.
2. Gills are light brown/mostly connected in spore form, some are dark brown/black and all connected, all spores are extremely close together.
3. Caps range from 1/8 inch to 1 1/4 inch. All stems are thin and range from 2 inches to 4 inches.
4. Stems are white and light tan, thin, and hollow, kind of rubbery.
5. Capse are light tan with golden spot in the middle. Kind of sticky. They are circular and mostely concave.
6. I dont know how to do a spore print, please tell me......
7. None have bruised yet, been an hour.
8. Smell like shit and dirt.

chill, smoke a bowl, it's only been ten mins since you posted the info.

they are not active. if you want more info on them a spore print and bigger pics are in order.

Peace
edit BTW what exactly were you hoping for them to be?

cut the cap off the stem and place it on "medium of choice" I like foil, then place a cup over it for at least a couple hours a day works better to get the full color.

uhhhhhh... you'll probably either die, get sick, or be ok. but you won't trip out.

don't eat any mushrooms unless you know exactly what they are.

It really looks like you have a mixed collection. Take spore prints and the we'll see what has to be said about activity of these mushrooms.

The chances of him finding a Psilocybe in New York state is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The only active shrooms that even grow in NY are Careuples (sp) and Pan Subbs.. The first one you'll probably never find because they're extreamly rare, the second is somewhat common but is weak in potency.

Good luck anyway, but those shrooms you posted are most likely not active.

Without an ID either nothing will happen or you will either get sick or possibly die. NEVER eat a mushroom without a positive ID first.

I can tell you those are 99% not active.

Lol dude don't have a heart attack... There are many many many many many non-active species of mushrooms, and unfortunately thats what you've stumbled upon. They are definantly not active.

that prolly means you have different species.

if you are serious about wanting to learn how to ID mushrooms other than this one time, I suggest picking up a field guide and saving us some of the trouble.

and if you dont know what you're looking for, theres always Google, the shroomery, your public library and countless other resources.

The reason I asked for spore prints was I thought I spotted a few subbs in that bowl of mushrooms.

Black prints confirmed it. You did find some actives, but you don't know enough about what you're doing yet to differtiate the active mushrooms from the poisonous ones. Do not eat anything you found. Read up, learn about Panaeolus subbalteatus, learn key factors for identifying mushrooms, and return to the place you picked these to pick some subbs.

Again: DO NOT EAT YOUR MUSHROOMS, there is a possiblity you have some deadly mushrooms mixed in with them.
