Questions on Humidity
    #3214596 - 10/04/04 05:47 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I am using a basic PF-tek. I am wondering how much air exchange is needed while the jar is colonizing (is at as much during fruiting?). If it is, can I cut holes in the sides of the terrariums and use filter material to cover it? Will this supply the needed air exchange?

If I can use this meathod will the humidity loss be substantial (I am using wet perlite).

A side question on light. While the jars are colonizing it is crucial to keep it pitch black? Or can light be in the growing area?

Thanks and I hope this jummble of unanswered questions isnt too . . jummbly?

air exchange and light should be kept to the bare minimum during colonization
only a small hole on the top of the colonizing jar is necessary during the period between innoculation and birthing

Wow . .so I should just shut the damn things off from the world hey? Would the filtering hole work during fruiting? I could use two seperate terrariums for the two processes. Thanks Muse!

yes, your incubator will probably be a seperate terrarium from your fruiting chamber, as you don't want unneccessarily high humidity during inncubation, just like you wouldn't want the high incubation temps during fruiting.
yr colonizing jars should pretty much be shut off from the world. just make sure to maintain a good temp and check every three days or so for contams and to monitor growth

How picky is the temp. I hear around 85 degrees is good, but It has been at 70 for a few days due to a repair I need to make. Is this really horrid?

it is way to low for colonization
they will colonize, it will just take a long while

83 is a good temp, 86 is optimal for myc growth, but we assume the substrate is a few degrees hotter than the air in the incubator...
going much over this temp is just as bad as going much under

80-83 is good..I like 83. Over 86 is very bad though. Do like muse says!
