Hare Krishnas

We had a bunch of these folks in my Philosophy of Religions class today. Very neat people.

I'm not a member of any religion myself, and am really pretty anti-religion. But these people just seem so happy and nice. They talked about all the things they do, with feeding those who really cant eat, and helping out communities in other ways.

All I've ever heard about them is the popular culture nut-job/ cult label. I feel kind of bad about that. Very very nice and happy people. They do good things.

my friend gave me one of their books.. he told me he stole it from them because he hates them? (he's a bit of a close minded alcoholic..)

i had never even heard of a "hairy christener" before that day..

the reading was really very strange, and i've never met a hare krishna in person, but they're probably interesting, to say the least.

They do good things, but their organisation is very cultish. No need to pretend that only one of those statements is true.

hare hrishna group is to "mainstream hinduism"

as

they are very cult like in san diego. on the weekends they will parade through the streets playing music and dancing up and down the streets of downtown all night passing out flyers for a "free meal". i am not saying they are bad people, or even have bad intentions, but luring in hungry people only to preach and try to convert seems wrong to me. i have gone to a few of these free meals when i was homeless, and i found i was better off going to st vincent depauls cause they just servced you food and let you eat. the krishnas round here are worse then bible thumpers. but yes they seem very happy with their lives. i am just not down with people always trying to convert other poeple to their thoughts, and using a persons hunger as a tool to lure people.

I always see them at festivals every time it's the same routine. "Please accept these completely free pamphlets about krishna. We only ask for a small $4 donation to cover the printing cost...."

Reminds me of that christian cult that preys on homeless and crazy people. I think they are called jesus friends or something?

their sunday feasts are excellent.
people in australia believe they manufacture large quantities of e.
it might explain a lot.

they have an interesting history, especially the power struggles that took place after prabhupada died, couple of guys got offed.

They've given me a few free meals, and I ate at a couple of their Govinda restaurants in different cities around the world.

They have never tried to convert me, they have given me a few books though.

I'm quite happy to be aware of those ideas - like all others.
