Mother Urges Raise In Gun Buying Age
    #3210376 - 10/03/04 06:04 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

"LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - The mother of a Maine National Guard soldier who used a shotgun to kill himself at age 18 is pressing state lawmakers to raise the minimum age for buying shotguns to 21. "I will do whatever it takes to open people's eyes to this and change the laws," said Catherine Crowley, whose son Laurier "Larry" Belanger Jr. shot himself on May 21 with a gun he bought two days earlier...Crowley said she believes that if her son had been too young to buy a gun, or if the law mandated a waiting period, "he would be sitting right here with me now."...A higher age limit or a waiting period might have been enough to keep her son from acting on his depression, Crowley said."

riiiiiight.

certainly tragic, but come on...

She probally focuses her anger on the gun laws because to admit the truth would mean to admit she did a poor job of raising a son, a very difficult thing to admit to ones self i imagine.

Of course everyone knows that guns are the only means of committing suicide.

I think we should raist the age you can drive a car.  Auto accidents are the biggest cause of death among young people, and i think that 16 is way too young to give a child that kind of responibility.  But your point is still makes sense  :nut:

thats because young people are always trying to show off.

its so weird, age is such a relative thing IMO, i think maturity and responsibility has less to do with age and more to do with personal experience and parenting.

i've met some very mature 16 year olds and very immature 22 year olds.

I agree that responsibility has most to do with personal experience (which you gain with age  ) and parenting.  Ive always thought that the huge death toll (about 40,000 people a year) on the roads is a real problem that can be fixed but is largley ignored.  Stricter tests should be required to drive on public streets, and speed/traffic laws should be enforced more and better (cops would rather arrest a kid w/pot, than some crazed aggressive driver).  Sorry to go off topic.

Anyone ever read the book by Hubert Shelby Jr. where a guy tries to a buy a handgun to commit suicide. Well, because of the waiting period he decides to go on a hommicidal rampage in those days while waiting for the gun. Interesting and a good read.

And that is the most relevant point to the whole issue. If someone so completly hell bent on doing themselves in they will surely find a way; waiting list for guns or not.

Hysterical mothers should always be ignored.

But your legal age system really sucks ass. You can go die in one of your horrible wars at the age of 18, but you're not allowed a drink before you're what? 23?

in related news the drinking age will now be raised to 30.

so when this guy gets down and he just turns 21 they'll want to raise the age to 25...makes sense to me.
