Dying Salvia
    #3210186 - 10/03/04 05:14 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I think my salvia cutting may be dying (or already dead). I planted it last night in my room next to a windowsil. The soiling mix has some potting mix I picked up at Walmart yesterday, along with some perlite and vermiculite. Below are the pictures of the cutting at the momment.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/04-40/683740335-IMG_0127b.jpg

If anyone can help me tell if this is dead or what I might be able to do to help it grow, anything will help. Thanks.

EDIT: Pics should be working now.

Who is sending out these leaveless sticks? I understand that Salvia can easily be propagated without leaves and even without nodes, but to novice growers or people who are just not familiar with salvia it can be quite a disheartening present.

I was only able to get one pic to load, (the first one in the link, and i removed the Thumb tag to see it bigger). It looks like it's just going, give it some time, put a humidity tent over it. Give it some indirect sunlight too, not direct light if that's what it gets in the sill.

About a week ago, Namaste had something in the market for 12 free cuttings that he had made earlier. That's how we got them.

Also, what exactly is a humidity tent? Just a clear cup places around the plant or what? Maybe some suran/plastic wrap around the bucket held up by a stake in the middle?

Free? Can't beat that. It should live even though it's a stick, this is how he probably managed to get 12 cuttings out of it.

Put a clear plastic bag over the top of your pot = humidity tent.

So would you reccommend a humidity tent to ease the transition, even tho it was originally grown in a low-humidity environment?

I'm unclear on that point.

I didn't know it was grown in a low humidity environment. I either didn't see it or i can't read and comprehend. But umm yeah even though it was in low humidity, with most mint plants you put them in a humidity tent to root them. It's very rudimentary but it works.

Alright, well, I took a ziplong bag and creased it on the sizes so it looks more like a square that came to a line at the top. The bottom (where bag meets soil) is has a small opening, but that shouldn't matter as it lets CO2 in and lets moisture out to get used to the environment. I figure it should work as the bag is clear, I'll see how it looks in the morning.

No worries, it was kinda left out.  The lack of leaves *appears* to be due to pre-trimming harvesting.....i've got like, 2 baby ones, and a few nubs where it looked like others were removed.
The black on mine is a growing a bit, but it doesn't look fatal at all.

Haven't really found an explanation for that yet tho.

I'm just glad i have something to post in here about again.....i had a nice little collection going years ago, but had to give them away.

A nice, this is my first plant actually.  I'm hoping to find a way to get stuff growing around my room, but I don't know if I will be able to without using grow lights (no place that I can setup shop - hoping I can find some decent ethno's I can grow as house plants).  I'll see how it goes though.  Maybe I'll get lucky.

was your root structure already formed?
Cause i got the feeling that he had rooted them prior to shipping.....mine had a goodly bit of roots, and i don't think those could grow in 3 days.

Yes, I had roots up to 2-3 cm long on mine. If there were no roots, I would have put it into a clear cup with a clear top filled a little bit with water to allow it to root in there.

I'm pretty sure it's dead now. I just went to check on the plant and each side has quite a bit of black on it. I'm hoping that by tomorrow something will have changed, but I doubt it'll get very far. Good luck with those of you with surviving plants!

From my limited experience of growing salvia, I have noticed that the blackening occurs when the humidity is too low. You needed that baby in a dome from the start. I'd say its fucked, even based on the first pics you posted, its hard to stop that black from spreading once it gets to an internode it seems to take out the whole internode.

You should try to salvage it.

Try to put it in water to root it. The black will spread like canser if you just let it stay there without roots. Keep it out of direct sunlight as the stem is probably in shock.

If you have a shroom fruiting chamber with a humidifier, it helps a ton to stick em in there.

Well, it already has roots, so that's not the problem. I have it beside a windowsil and the plant is covered with a jar I'm using to keep the humidity trapped - so now there are two things blocking the sunlight (window + jar). I'd put it in the shroom fruiting chamber but it's not tall enough to fit the pot. I *THINK* it might have revived a little bit since yesterday, but I'm not sure (It was doing HORRIBLE last night). I'll check on it again tomorrow and how it is looking a little better.

The jar isn't opaque; it's just an old, clear canning jar that I found in the basement and washed. I can't imagine it affecting the jar at all.

Score! I would have started a new thread but I decided I'd just post on my old thread. I just took a look at my baby and I saw a new little plant growing there! It looks as though my salvia plant grew a small seedling or something right next to it, within a centimeter or so. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow, but it's great news for someone who though their plant had died!

Awesome, my control plant just got a sprout within the last two days, so hopefully within the week everyone else who got a cutting from the same batch will have one. :tongue2:

Salvia will often sprout new shoots from the bottom of the stem or from just below the soil. Never give up on a plant. It may look dead on the surface, but if the roots are alright you will have new shoots in no time. Don't water it too much and make sure the water can drain out the bottom of the pot.
