diy synthesizer
    #3208170 - 10/02/04 10:40 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

ive been building my synths for a while now.
once you have a good patchable analog synth in the house you won't be so interested in software nor digital synths.
i have over 25 synths in my house...the digital ones sit behind my sofa, they just don't sound good anymore.
there are things you can do in analog that just cannot be imitated with digital.
of course digital has its advantages - keeps in tune, compact, can imitate real instruments.

buying old analogs is expensive and maybe it needs some maintenance.

the way to go is do-it-yourself.
there are literally 1000s of designs freely available on the net.
many of the people publishing their designs are very happy to give support and help if you have problems.
just search - diy synth

for a total beginner, the paia fatman is the best one to build first.
it comes as a complete kit with all the parts. they give step by step instructions and detailed parts explanations. if you can't get it working they will patiently help you out.
the fatman is a midi controlled bass synth and sounds great.
will take around 12 hours to build and cost under $100. all you need is a 25watt soldering iron.
www.paia.com

this is my paia fatman

another guy who is very cool is rayland, though next step up -
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/
he sells circuit boards, but you will have to buy your own parts - he gives link on where to do this.

if you are really getting into it, i think Ken Stone has the best and cheapest boards available, his designs are very esoteric and makes total headfucking music - http://www.cgs.synth.net/

these days i make my own circuit boards, often hand-drawn, not pretty but cheap and quick. i recycle parts from dead tv's, stereos, etc.
this way it is a very cheap hobby - only cost is time.....but nothing i love better than plugging in a new module.

i made this for a friend

yep manniquin was me...paia will sell you a front panel or a box.
but really you can use anything - check the 'hall of fame' at
http://www.paia.com/hallofam/
its more fun and satisfying to make something unique,
instead of just buying a mass produced item.
i got the torso for $10...seemed a good idea at the time.

circuit bending is a good place to start
especially those speak&spells. casio keyboards are good to mess with too.

admittedly my largest synth cost me near on $1000
and about 6 months
if i bought it readymade, it would cost me well over 10grand.
it is a bit overboard - around 90 different modules

you can build an excellent little machine for under $20 - just recycle from dead electronics.
you could have a paia fatman for under $100, its got midi you can control it from your pooter software sequencer.

cheers stefan
sorry i have no music online.
i rarely record these days, i just play, put on the headphones and trip out on it for hours.

if anyone feels inspired to try and build something, please ask any questions. i'd be happy to help out.

here are some more links -
this page gives a lot of info for beginners and the aim is to make synth modules and guitar fx boxes for next to nothing. they give very good step by step instructions for total beginners-
http://www.commonsound.com/kits.html

this one takes a while to load, so be patient
plenty of mp3s to check out.
i think the guy who builds all this stuff doesn't sleep
he's been building vacuum tube based synths recently - 300volts=zap!
http://www.carrionsound.com/gallery/synth/thumbs.htm

this is a diy synth beginners faq - good place to start
http://www.synth.clara.net/beginners.html

this guy is just awesome
he has cd's for sale of the beautiful music he made on his home built synths - lots of sample mp3s to enjoy
http://home.debitel.net/user/jhaible/hj.html

have fun!
