The mescal been growing thread.
    #3208138 - 10/02/04 10:26 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

i have gotten a few hints from Aneg, and there seems to be a few problems with them once they are seedlings.

I have searched, and found VERY little.  so basically i am looking for anyones insight on growing these plants.  im not looking for warnings or ingestion stuff as im never going to eat them, i just want a nice healthy mescal bean bush.  the beans are works of art and i want to use them in crafts and such.  have say a beanie with beans in them that i grew.  that would be awsome.

anyway, who here has had ANY experience with growing?  good bad anything helps.

thanks

edited.  figured id have one post on the shroomery that doesnt look liek a 2 year old typed it.

I'm an information whore.....
so ehre's one site...good tips on germination....
http://davesgarden.com/pdb/go/55062///

I assume you already saw the Erowid index, but if not....
check it for Sophora secundiflora
http://www.rsnz.govt.nz/publish/nzjb/2002/032-lo.pdf

This states that only teh scarification is necessary for germination.

Other than that, it doesn't seem to be all that difficult a plant.

That first link is the goldmine tho.
Hope this helps!

Now if it smelled like orange cool aid you might have gotten some interest.

I have a few beans from years ago. I don't know how long they keep. I never got around to growing them. They can be eaten but are dangerous.

Here are a few pix of my texas mountain laurels. they are not in bloom
this time of year, alot of pods tho.

The attached pods

The red beans and pods

These trees were bought from a local nursery... i think thats a good place
to look if you want one of your own.

I pose a question though, do the beans or ricin have any skin
toxicity? It might not be wise to use the beans for any purpose
because of the fact it contains ricin...

you can buy them at home depot and lowes here. I have like 8 of them as hedge plants. No special care, just stick them in the ground. they are super drought tolerant, as they come from the desert region of texas. I only watered mine for the first few weeks, then have not watered since and that was three years ago. They are very slow growers, however one seems to be growing faster probably due to the fact it is closet to the driveway and catches more runoff water. You wont get seeds from them for a long time. those seeds are a dime a dozen around here if you want some I can get them. We used to rub them on the ground, they would get real hot and then touch each other with them. We called them burn beans.

i was just at lowes and home depot getting rooting hormone, didn't see any laurels there. i asked the guy if they carried it and told me their stock varies by region, but i know the nursery definitely has it.
its very true that they require very little water, the couple inches of rain we get a  year seems to do well enough.

Picked up my first san pedro @ lowes too.  :egg:
