Grape Juice?
    #3207400 - 10/02/04 06:54 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

When I soak my WBS, I usually soak it in water/honey/beer. This combination has worked very well for me. I've always read before that mycelium uses dextrose a lot. 100% Grape Juice contains a lot of dextrose naturally. Do think soaking in grape juice would be of any benefit? I plan on experimenting with this soon, but I wanted to know peoples comments on it.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of colonization times do you get with your water/honey/beer mix? What proportions do you use and also what kind of sugar is present in honey?

I know, you look for answers and just get more q's but do you get a significant decrease in colonization time compared to plain water?

I usually will put the WBS in a pot, then fill water up until it covers all of it. I then remove all sunflower seeds that I can. I then add a moderate amount of honey just by squeezing some back and forth over the WBS, and then add half a beer. I use a half a beer for about 8 pint jars worth of WBS. I don't go overboard with it. Afterwards I then mix it up, and let it soak for about 12 hours before PCing. It was very noticible that colonizing time increased with the honey and beer as compared to just water. I think honey contains a few different types of sugars, but mostly fructose I think.

I'm trying to find out if soaking in grape juice instead of or with the honey/beer might be of any benefit.

I'm no expert (having just one grow under my belt), but I would think that grape juice is probably too acidic. I make a lot of wine, and if memory serves, grape juice has a PH between 3-4. Also, grape juice is very heavily sulfited (to prevent fermentation) -- this might kill everything right away.

the juice might also start to ferment the wbs or the vise versa.
