'Europe's biggest mushroom' found

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3692136.stm Swiss scientists have found what they say may be Europe's biggest mushroom - covering an area about the size of 35 football pitches. The fungus was discovered in a national park near the eastern town of Ofenpass, said the Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Countryside Research (WSL). Spanning 35 hectares (86 acres), the mostly underground fungus is believed to be 1,000 years old, the WSL added. The Honey Mushroom (Armillaria ostoyae) is edible, but it can kill trees. "The majority of the fungus is an underground network that looks a bit like shoelaces," WSL's spokeswoman Muriel Bendel said. "The surface mushrooms look like the normal type you would pick, and are brown to yellow," the spokeswoman added. Although harmless to humans, certain species of the vast underground organism can colonise trees, gradually strangling them, scientists say. The fungus is only visible in autumn, when its mushrooms break through the earth and grow around the roots of trees, the WSL said. The Swiss fungus is considerably smaller than another Honey Mushroom growing in the US. Found in the Malheur national forest in Oregon, that fungus covers 890 hectares (2,200 acres) - making it the largest living organism ever discovered.

i read an article on the same mushrooms somewhere else, the size was determined by taking samples of the mycelium from several places, and they all proved to be from the same source with the same genetic(?) make up, so it was determined to be the same mass.

I think this article is about the same largest living organism I read about months ago, except that article was about how many acres it covered. I don't remember any mass estimates.
They probably got a fairly precise volume estimate, and then figured out what the average density was and estimated from there.

This is some mycelium from the same species in my local wood. It has some of the thickest mycelium, which it uses to spread from tree to tree underground. some trees and shrubs are immune to it though.

The thick mycelium of the honey fungus is actually known as "rhizomorphs" and these allow the fungus to survive in the soil and invade trees. The black coloration is due to the pigment melanin, the same stuff that colours our skin/hair. Melanin helps in retention of water and protects the mycelium.
Interestingly, some strains of this fungus are bioluminescent- i.e. they glow in the dark. So, not only is this the largest fungus on the planet, but it also glows in the dark!

I have seen some today under the bark of a dead fir tree. They are really black and quite thick - did not know that this could be mycelium ...

I cloned some wild fruits earlier this year, and the luminescence is pretty faint, but definitely visible on agar. It's got to be really dark for it to be seen though.
