It had primodia? You mean the little white knots that form into pins? But before you birthed it? Or did you mean it had something else..

I've heard of it. It's called bacterial contams. Can make jars look slimey and wet too.

CASING DISASTER UPDATE:

Sorry to say, but I gave up and threw it out.

In the 6 days from my last post, the bin hadn't done anything.  There was a slight increase in mycelium growth, but not much.  The bin was definitely taking on some kinda weird smell.  Didn't want to chance anything, so I tossed it.

<sniff> -- holding back tears... <sniff>

Anyways, I poked around in the substrate before I garbaged it to see what was going on.  There actually was quite a bit of white rhizos throughout the whole thing, but not healthy-looking.  Whispy strands everywhere -- not strong fluffy growth.

I think the problem was WAY too much compost/manure and also too much water.  The mycelium couldn't grow properly in that environment.  I think bacteria were starting to compete.

But all is not lost: I've got a couple mini-casings on the go from some WBS I had sitting around.  They're doing really well, and I'll be posting a new thread with pics in a few days!

Probably to much water but sounds like a bacterial thing. Hard to say from a description of course but ya know  Sorry to hear about your loss though :frown: Good luck with your other endevours

If kramers doing fine with H2o2 then a switch will may only save him from having to "recharge" your perlite so often. H2o2 breaks down quickly where as iodine does not, kramers a smart man he'll know what to do  A couple of drops vs. a half bottle or more of 3% is also something to consider.

Thanks Scatman, Hyphae, Hawks, etc. etc. for all your help.

Yeah, the Avatar.  Found it on an Aquarium owners' bulletin board.  Weird, huh?

Love the boobies.  In fact, they're so distracting I have trouble reading the posts!

wow hyphae, that IS something to consider. i go through peroxide like a hospital... i think i might just switch to iodine myself. does it kill mold/spores too?

how much should be diluted into the water i use to wet the perlite?

1-2 drops per gallon. This renders bacterial contamed water safe for drinking but the water needs to sit for an hour.
