Spraying casing during fruiting?
    #3205908 - 10/02/04 06:09 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hi everybody,

I am a beginner in the middle of my first grow. I am cultivating Koh Samui on a 1 liter casing. Last weekend I harvested the first flush, which was successful, although the mushrooms were very skinny and small. The flush was about 40g wet.

After reading lots of posts on this board, I realized probably the casing was too dry to support big mushrooms. So I dunked it and started to spray it every day. What a difference! The new set of pins has just formed, and they are big and fat -- they look great!

(If anyone wants to see pics, I can post pics of both the first and the new flush.)

I am wondering, is there a need to spray the casing during the fruiting stage? I've been doing it so far because I thought the rapid growth of fruits must deplete the moisture from the casing. So far it looks good. But I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it. So please let me know if you have some experience or tips on when to spray the casing and when not to.

Thanks!

Yes, the casing should remain moist(not wet) all the time. Try not to spray the mushrooms directly, just the casing surface.

Thanks Anno, that's what I thought. But actually it is extremely difficult to spray the casing only and not the mushrooms! I can drip water onto the casing in between the mushrooms if I drip rather than spray. But if I try to spray a mist onto the casing, it is impossible to focus it enough to avoid hitting the mushrooms.

Does it hurt the mushrooms if they get sprayed?

I hope your mushrooms have rain coats for their sake.

I wouldn't be too worried about spraying the mushrooms. what people post are the way they do it, but im sure nobody has tested to see if "spraying mushrooms conflicts with growing" or anything. so just keep on at it.

Misting casings is important and misting mushrooms doesn't hurt a thing just like in nature they do just fine as long as there is adequate fresh air exchange. As Domey stated always use "clean" water whether boiled or distilled or whatever. Keeping your casings not just moist but at "near saturation" has made a tremendous difference in all my friends grows, now this means a very moist casing layer which is allowed to go through it's evaporative cycle between fanning/misting this is called transipation and aids greatly in pin development as well as larger healthier fruits. The key is keeping things "clean" the mushrooms will absorb all water as long as the environment isn't saturated with water (not good!). GL and welcome!

Thanks to everyone for the answers, that was very helpful. So I'll keep spraying them, they really seem to like it anyway.. And yes, gloom, I'll buy them some little raincoats...

ganeshaa, here are the pics, since you are interested:

Here is a pic of the first flush, this was taken when the veils were just breaking on the biggest mushies, just before I picked them. You can see how skinny they are, the caps on the biggest ones were only about the size of dimes.

I wouldn't bother with peroxiding your casing unless you have an issue, use straight "clean" water. The reason being is peroxide retards myc slightly and if continued well you'll be raising retarded mycelium!!!

Oops sorry about the pics.. I didn't do it right. My pics are too large, the forum won't let me post them. I have to figure out how to make them small enough to post on the forum, then I will post them!
