Some people like tax cuts, but don't understand that the long-term effects of deficit spending essentially amount to a tax on every dollar produced.

Now, similar question: Why the fuck do people support Kerry?

I support Bush because I dont think Kerry knows what he wants. At least Bush knows what he wants, he just sucks at getting there. Kerry doesnt even know where he stands on issues. He contradicts himself without even realizing it. But that doesnt mean he cant win me over in the debates. He just needs a miracle to do it. If and when they debate over economic issues and Kerry has a better policy than Bush, and knows how to get it to work, then I might vote for Kerry. I think we need a better economy over anything else right now, even the war.

Bush takes clear stands on issues.
If I disagree -- which I do, on quite a few -- I know that I can go out and make a big stink about them, raise public support, and ideally convince him or prevent him from acting on them.
He's not John Kerry. I don't know WHAT he's going to do, I don't know WHERE he stands, or WHAT issues he's going to pursue when he takes office. He's an unknown, a rogue.
I feel like I'm humping a piano here.. keep hitting the same key.
The devil you know over the devil you don't. It's simple enough there's a colloquial saying to let you know which is the correct choice.

Besides all that I can't say I trust Democratic presidents. Let's exclude FDR since -- well since the bastard was elected 4 times.
What have any Democratic presidents since FDR done for America that's good?
Gotten us into Vietnam?
Promised we'd get to the moon and then get killed before being able to do anything about it?
Ooh, the DMCA? Or getting us into Somalia and Bosnia with little to no planning on how to go in OR out (at least, far less than the planning put into Iraq)?
Or maybe.. JIMMY CARTER! The only person I can think of more effective internationally OUT of office than they were IN office?

It's a shoddy track record, and John Kerry doesn't have half the cajones that any previous democratic president could flop down on the table.

Ahhh, remember the days of Budget surplus under Clinton....

Now I pose the same question to you, what has any Republican president done that's good for America?

What, Reagan won the cold war, ahahahahahahaha, right.
Bush '43 went to Iraq, left saddam in power, and sold out the Kurds so they could be mowed down by helicopters.
Nixon did great things for the War on Drugs.
Reagan lead with his voodooeconomics.

Got us out of Vietnam?
Started the War on Drugs -- but started it as a TREATMENT, not ENFORCEMENT and IMPRISONMENT program? It wasn't till later -- you know, under democrats, and then Reagen, that it turned into an inquisition, really.
THE EPA?

And yes! All these wonderous examples are found in the most villified Republican of all time, Tricky Dick.

Then we had Reagen.. and Bush Sr.. I'll put them on par with Clinton and Carter, how's that work out?

And let's say the Democrats getting us into Vietnam can be equatable with GW getting us into the War on Terror..
blarginy. looks like it's a wash!

"Bush takes clear stand on the issues." That's great. I want a decisive leader who makes horrible decisions and sticks to them because changing his mind to fit the circumstances is somehow seen as a sign of weakness.

Bush doesn't have to DO ANYTHING to take a clear stand on the issues. We've had the last 4 years to learn exactly where he stands. We're just getting to know John Kerry. And John Kerry's approach towards just about everything is more nuanced than Bush's "stay the course", so maybe the complexity of his thought process doesn't lend itself to a nice little soundbite you can take home and snuggle up with.

And as for the so-called "War on Drugs" - well that's been a smashing success now, hasn't it. I guess W felt that if it worked for his pappy then it would work as a slogan against terrorism; and I hate to say, it has largely succeeded in that regard - by propagandizing the American people into believing that the situation we are now in in ANY way resembles a conventional war.

The "War on Terror". Please. Let's just cut to the chase, and declare "War on Fear" - and while we're at it, maybe we could declare "War on Fire" and, oh fuck it, let's just declare "War on Bad."

WHAT? WHAT? Nixon had a chance to decrim marijuana, in fact, his special commitee recommended, but he pushed ahead, taking a hardline stance.

Besides, how is the war on ANY drugs a good thing?

It is true that defcit spending has longterm effects which are harmful. What isn't true is that tax cuts increase deficits.

There are also short term effect which are harmful. What happens when the Federal Reserve (or anyone else using fractional reserve created currency) buys the government's debt instruments? Isn't new money created? Doesn't this new money lower the value of existing money in circulation by increasing the money supply? Isn't this in effect a tax on every dollar in circulation?

Quote:

What isn't true is that tax cuts increase deficits.

That is conditional on the degree of current taxation and the level of government spending. From where we are now in the U.S.... If we cut taxes to 10% and do not cut spending, what will happen? If we cut taxes to 25% and do not cut spending, what will happen? If we cut taxes to 50% and do not cut spending, what will happen? If we cut taxes to 75% and do not cut spending, what will happen? If we cut taxes to 100% and do not cut spending, what will happen?

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Evolving writes:

Also correct.

Clearly you can reduce the deficit more rapidly by both increasing revenue and decreasing costs than you can by doing just one or the other. However, to say that reducing tax rates automatically reduces revenue is wrong.

The problem the US has faced historically is that whenever more revenue is produced through cutting taxes the increased revenue generated by the cuts (and usually more) is instantly spent.

Of course there will be discontinuities in a graph showing the effect of various levels of tax cuts. But does anyone reading this forum realistically see the prospect of a 25% tax cut across the board -- let alone a 75% or 100% one? I sure don't.
