Kitesurfing from Shoreline, WA.
    #3205105 - 10/01/04 10:51 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Today I went on a small mushroom hunt after work. The mushrooms were sparse. I went to an area with a view of Puget Sound and saw this...

It looks like a ton of fun. Has anyone tried this?

I live in the kiteboarding/windsurfing capital of the world -- Cabarete, Dominican Republic. We've had World Cup events in windsurfing here since 1987, and World Cup Kiteboarding events here since 1999.

I'm a windsurfer myself, but I know a lot of kiters and will probably get around to trying kiting sooner or later.

No, I lived the first three and a half decades of my life in Canada. But I moved here in early 1988 and I have no intention of leaving. Cabarete is one of the most fantastic places in the world to live. The government does nothing for you, but asks nothing of you either. The place is crawling with gorgeous women from all over the world (except for Japanese women -- I have yet to see a Japanese woman here). The night life here is truly unbelievable as well, and the local psilocybes are plentiful.

There is one enormous downside for those who aren't discrete -- the government is deadly serious about drugs. Get caught with coke or X or weed and you'll be doing time in a Dominican jail. Not a pleasant picture. As well, the climate here is such that locally grown weed is the suxxors.

But there is no aggressive campaign against drugs -- you'd basically have to be dumber than a box of rocks to ever get caught. The cops are too lazy to pursue anything other than cast-iron leads.

I don't know how old you are, but I can swear to you that there are very few places in the world better to hang for a year or two before geting on with the grind of making money for your retirement than Cabarete. And if you like gorgeous scantily-clad women (or men) and literally world-class conditions for kiting, windsurfing, and surfing, then you are doing yourself an enormous disfavor by not at least taking a two week holiday here. I came here for a two week windsurfing vacation at the end of 1987 and returned home just long enough to resign my 100K per year job and sell my house and car. I was back here in less than three months and I've never regretted it.

If you want to come here to check it out, PM me and I'll set you up with some info on best places to stay.

thanks for the information man

I didn't know you could just move to a country and stay there, is it that easy?

For the next few years I don't think I'll have enough money to take a vacation that expensive (I assume it's pretty expensive :smirk:) because I'm a student. I still have 3 years to go but I'm only 21 so all the time in the world

But I have conversations with a friend of moving to some place where we can surf a lot and the weather is good, that is when we are done with our studies. I wouldn't mind never smoking weed again if i could go surfing whenever I wanted

everything you say sounds great about living there. I'm giving it serious thoughts already

Yep. I lived here for a dozen years before I even bothered applying for residency. I was working at a high profile beach bar and never once was asked to prove I was a legal resident. I doubt that more than five per cent of the young people working here as windsurf or kite instructors, hotel receptionists, bartenders, waiters and whatever have ever applied for a work permit. The government basically doesn't care.

But if you do want to make it legal, it can be done. It's not that expensive, but it is a pain in the ass and kind of time consuming, because all the paperwork has to be filed in Santo Domingo (the capital city) and that involves a four hour bus trip each way. It also can't really be done in a single trip -- you pretty much have to go there twice or if you're unlucky, three times.

But as I say, the vast majority of us never even bother.

It's not that expensive, really. Martinair (the Dutch charter airline company) has cheap flights. Also, at certain times of year the travel companies running the all-inclusive packages will give some outrageously good deals -- usually in the fall. You can get some great deals in October and November and the first half of December. Unfortunately, that's also the time when the wind is the shittiest in the Caribbean, so for a windsurfer there are better times to come. There are also good deals starting right after Easter and running till end of June, and the wind then is great, especially May and June.

sounds good
I 'accidentally' visited a few travlling sites yesterday and they have some interesting deals indeed! so who knows if I save up some money for next year...
I don't mind working in a bar or as surfing instructor especially if those are jobs that are easy to find
