i have recently had several healthy looking trays (2.5 inch straw with 50/50 peat verm casing) go all wrong on me. very sparse pinset with dark malformed caps. most aborted. thoese that didnt developed extreamly slowly, with small very dark caps, and swollen stems. when picked they felt dense and wet. but trays show no sighn of contam. i have untill now had good success with the grow space, and methods i am using. so my guess is either the im using is bad, or perhaps some sort of bactieria contam. but i could easily be overlooking something, so if these symptoms sound familiar to anyone please let me know. thanks.
Pics will definitely help. Bacterial contam is a very real possibility especially in an overly wet environment. There is the possibility that your running to high an RH level too which will lead to many aborts and interfer with transpiration. GL I hope ya get it under control ASAP!
Agreed. . .many factors can lead to trays aborting, but if you're doing the same things as before and it worked great before, it sounds like a possible intruder. Do the caps show any variable coloration? Like dark splotches, patches of strange texture, bending, etc.? You described the 'aborts' as wet and dense. . .could there be any reason the rH is higher this time around? Air exchange? As another possibility, the strain could be shot. . .was it from spores? Old culture? Has the temperature dropped at all due to autumn?
