What could I use in place of brown rice flour? Im following the simple cubensis growing tek and cant find brown rice flour anywhere in my dinky little town. I picked up a bag of brown rice thinking surely that must be it. Is their any other substitutes for brown rice flour?

millit flower or ground up millit based birdseed. Or just grow on whole WBS popcorn or rye.

if you've got brown rice... start smashing... you'll have BRF in no time.

Most people get organic brown rice, and grind it in a coffee grinder or blender. BRF is usually made, not purchased.
Don't worry, it is easy.

Grinding up br to make BRF didnt work at all for me, whole wheat flour works for sure?? if not simply injecting spore into the jar of boiled and sterilized WBS works??

you can grind up some WBS and follow the brf tek with it. Or you can grind up the BR. IME the wbsf is better, dunno why, just seems like it is, but it also is the only type of cake that's ever contaminated on me.

I tried other kinds of flours and I can say the texture isn't the same. It might get harder for hte mycellium to colonize a sticky mixture. Search harder, or just order some on the internet. I'm sure you can get some pretty good prices online.

Coffee grinder + wild bird seed = wbs flour. Its awesome. In my experience its worked better and colonized faster then BRF. Only thing is you need to filter out the sunflower seeds. I have a strainer with holes big enough for the little seeds to fall through but not for the sunflower. Or you can put them in a big pot of water and the sunflowers will float to the top..but then you gotta let it dry for grinding..
Edit: Almost forgot..the other thing about WBS flour is you WILL need to pressure cook it. I've heard of people getting by with steaming it but its not likely.

I've read several times that you don't really need to remove sunflower seeds. Bird seed might work with this guys method http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/8729280/an/0/page/0

Rye flour can be used, but you must pressure cook to sterilise just as you do with any other grain.

newbie here, so i couldn't get hold on brown rice so i tried a mix of roughly 1/2 ground cocoa shell waste and 1/2 mashed grains (the stuff you would feed your cattle/grass-eater after brewing beer). about 10 days since inoculation (from agar), there is def. some white mycelium visible so i guess it works but maybe not optimally. at least 2 or 3 jars had green mold on them so they were chucked out. i guess the contaminants are due to some water got into the dry verm layer making it wet in the steaming process. i don't have a Pressure Cooker and i forgot to use foil on the top of the jars. there is 1 small center-hole in the lids of the jars for steam to escape and later for air exchange. anyway just goes to show that many substrates can work
