Casing colonization time vs casing size
    #3204108 - 10/01/04 04:40 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

My question regards casings. A friend of mine had made two casings, each with 1 or 2 jars of 100% colonized popcorn from malt culture. The casing was straight up fine verm, about 1/2 an inch thick, and showed colonization within a week. His next casing however, made with 7 jars and coarse verm, with the same casing/substrate depth ratios (casing about 1 inch thick this time) has not shown any growth after 2 weeks in the incubator (83-85). Is this due to the coarse verm as opposed to the fine stuff? or the mass of the substrate and casing? Also, how moist should the casing surface be, and should it be covered (say with aluminum or saran wrap) or open?
Thanks

it should be covered with either of those. Also, the casing surface should be pretty damp, but not wet.

The last time i used a 1" casing layer it took forfuckingever to colonize.  I only go about 1/4-1/2" these days, works better for me.  Maybe you could rake some of it off....carefully w/o harming the mycelia.
